The Great God Pan/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

"[The Great God Pan] surmounts its rather clumsy prose and works its way relentlessly into the reader's terror-zone. How many sleepless nights has it caused? God knows, but a few of them were mine. I think 'Pan' is as close as the horror genre comes to a great white whale."
—From the endnotes to his short story collection Just After Sunset
  • Unfortunate Implications: A single, independent woman is a monster using sex to destroy men. She must be killed! (By men.) Specifically, the story is blaming a woman's sexual behavior for the downfall of her male partners, even though they participated willingly. Female sexuality has long been portrayed as demonic or dangerous, going back to Lilith, the Sirens, Circe, witches accused of sleeping with Satan, and so forth. The idea of women in general being the downfall of men dates back to Eve.
  • The Woobie: Poor Mary and Trevor.
