I tried to put a spoiler tag on the page for my short film A Day at Last Chance, but it won't work. Am I doing it wrong, or is the feature broken? Oh, and it looks like I can't get the link to the film's page working, either, but it's on the Proper Works page. We

Oh wait, maybe it only didn't work in the mobile version of the site that I saw on my phone. In the desktop version it seems to work. Still not sure why the link to the trope page won't work, though.

Okay, I figured out the problem with the link to the trope page. Still trying to get the hang of this.

A couple suggestions for the future, if you find yourself with the same problem:

  1. MediaWiki does not use CamelCase or curly bracket links. Ever. In particular, curly brackets are used for things called "templates", kind of like functions or subroutines for pages.
  2. MediaWiki links are case-sensitive. This is easier to handle on the Desktop site because you can turn on the AutoComplete function in your preferences (Gadgets tab, first item in the "All The Tropes Editing Enhancement Gadgets" section) if it's not already on. With it on, you just have to type the open brackets and the first few letters of the trope name to get a pop-up list in the upper right corner of the editor window that will offer you possible pages; keep typing until you see something that looks right, click it, and the link, properly formatted, will be inserted for you. On a mobile device, I'd suggest opening up another tab in ATT and searching for the trope you want, and copying it exactly.
  3. If your question after something doesn't work is "Am I doing it wrong, or is the feature broken?" the answer is usually "you're doing it wrong". You can check by looking at other pages. If they're displaying correctly, edit the page and look at how the correctly-working example is marked up, and make sure your non-working one matches it.
  4. Your edit history makes it pretty clear you came here from TVT. Have you read All The Tropes:So You're a TV Tropes Refugee? It should provide most of the information you need, particularly for links and spoilers. Help:Formatting has more detail on the fancier markup.

That said, let me just add a "welcome!" and offer thanks for your willingness to add to and improve the wiki.

Out of curiosity, what about my editing history gives away that I'm a TVT refugee?

I noticed a case where while you were coding a link with square bracket markup, you still put the page name in CamelCase, and had no vertical bar between it and the pothole text. And you corrected the resulting redlink first by changing to a different CamelCase page name, then by trying to surround the page name in curly brackets. And it still took you a couple of tries to put the vertical bar in once you had the page name worked out. And you were doing that on a trope entry for TV Tropes, for an example that was not exactly complimentary to TVT's moderators.

Elementary, really. <grin>
