VG Chartz/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Fan Dumb
  • Hype Backlash: Many forum goers overestimate how well games will sell, then cry foul when less-than-stellar sales are released.
  • Internet Backdraft: Try comparing this site to NPD or Media Create. Also, NEVER mention VG Chartz on NEO Gaf!
  • It's Popular, Now It Sucks: The very nature of the site averts that, although there are complainers for just about everything else.
  • Quality by Popular Vote: The site itself doesn't adhere to this, as they've given good review to games with poor sales. However, given the site's focus on sales, expect to see a number of people on the forums try to espouse this trope.
  • Vindicated by History: Lots of games have less than stellar sales for a few weeks, and are declared failures. A few months later, and the sales are now at blockbuster level.
    • Boom Blox was declared a flop for selling just 60,000 copies after its few weeks. It eventually sold over a million copies, and Electronic Arts called for a sequel.
    • Call of Duty World At War on the Wii was declared a flop based on lower sales than the Play Station 3 and the Xbox 360. Not only did this ignore the fact that Call Of Duty 4, which was the game that brought the series to a new audience, skipped the Wii before that game, it was proven wrong when that game still eventually sold a million copies, which is still not a common thing in games.
    • Just Dance, yet another Wii title. Released within a week or two of Modern Warfare 2, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Assassin's Creed 2, and Left 4 Dead 2, Just Dance opened with sales of under 8,000 in America, not even making the top 200 worldwide. Within the first few weeks however, the game's popularity spread through a strong advertising campaign and word of mouth amongst casual players. By the end of the year, over 700,000 units were sold. It gets better. By late 2010, Just Dance was the best selling Wii game not made by Nintendo or featuring a Nintendo mascot. Its sequel sold 2 million units in just over 2 months. In short, the franchise's popularity expanded nearly 1,000 times after the initial release.
