Vernor Vinge (October 2, 1944 – March 20, 2024)) was an influential modern Science Fiction writer. Along with several minor works, he wrote two Doorstopper novels in the Zones of Thought verse and, later, Rainbows End; all three won the Hugo Award for Best Novel. He also won the Hugo Award for Best Novella twice, for "Fast Times at Fairmont High" (to which Rainbows End is a Spiritual Successor) and the stand-alone "The Cookie Monster".
