City of Heroes/Fanfic Recs

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Proof that the remaining 10% is worth dying for.

These are recommendations made by Tropers for City of Heroes Fanfics, all of which have been signed. After a few samples, you will be able to judge whether you might be interested in a certain 'fic, based on who recommended it. Authors of fics are not permitted to recommend their own fics; an author shilling his own work via a recommendation he wrote himself lacks the independent point of view which gives a recommendation any value at all; it is also a level of self-promotion that we do not permit at All The Tropes.

Feel free to add a recommendation of your own to the list, but remember to use the template found below. Make sure you sign your recommendation! No-name recommendations may be deleted at other tropers' leisure. Do warn when a fanfic includes sexual situations.[1] Some people just don't like it, and as we all know, Shipping is Serious Business. Likewise, warn if it may head into non-canon territory.

Discussion of the recommendation is welcome on the discussion page. As such discussion is important, do remember to add the discussion page to the watchlist, if need be.

Recommendations Template

Title of the Fanfic by Author OR Fic Trope Page, by Author (Link)

  • Recommended by: Troper Name[2]
  • Synopsis: What's the story about? Give here a brief summary of the plot. It would be also useful to point out in what moment of the series the story takes place. If it's a Gen Fic but it has some romantic elements, note here the characters involved too.
  • Pairing(s): If it's a Shipping Fic, list here the pairings that feature in the fic (warn here if it's het, male slash or female slash). If it's a Gen Fic, remove this line. To tell the difference between the two, notice if the focus of the fic is on a romantic relationship or if it focuses on the other aspects of the story. In case of doubt, classify the story according to the genres it's been tagged: the Romance tag for Shipping, absence of that tag for Gen Fic.
  • Tags: If any are known. This would be things like WAFF, Lemon, Dark Fic, Slash Fic, any Trigger Warnings, etc. This is also where you would put character names with Characterization Tags if doing so would be equally indicative. ("uber!Harry" for Harry Potter, for instance.)
  • Comments: If you want to say something more about why you're recommending the fic, but please, keep it brief. We don't want Conversation in the Main Page.

General Fics

Stories which primarily focus on the normal goings on of the cast.

Faces of the City by "Megajoule"

  • Recommended by: Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: The Genius Loci of Kings Row makes the rounds of the City's other neighborhoods, looking for help to improve the lot of the people he protects. But while in the aftermath of the Rikti invasion sympathy is easily had, solid help is harder to come by. But he's always ready to give it where it's needed.
  • Comments: A moving, powerful piece about how the City of Heroes is a living place in the most literal of ways, but not without its own darknesses and tragedies. And although the central figure is the Spirit of the Row, and it was written early in the life of the game, epilogues and extra scenes were written over the years, bringing it up to date to the end of the game's original run, and turning the spotlight onto a few other City Spirits, including the reborn but still healing spirit of Faultline/Overbrook.
    • The story has two sequels. The first is By the Pricking of My Thumbs also by "Megajoule", but is little more than a vignette. Then there is Letting Go Again by Talen Lee, about the shaman of Kings Row, who works with the Spirit of the Row.

Crossover Fics

Stories which crossover with other characters or works.

By Mutual Consent by Taliserian

  • Crossover with: Worm
  • Recommended by: Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: Taylor Hebert is contacted by an extradimensional alien entity that grants superhuman powers. However, this one believes in informed consent. A crossover where a Warshade finds the infamous locker.
  • Comments: As of March 2021 this is still starting out, with only seven (shortish) chapters, but the writing quality is superb, the dialogue rings true, and you don't need to be (too) familiar with Worm to enjoy the crossover elements. Definitely worth a look, and worth following.

A Schoolgirl's Tale by Robert M. Schroeck

  • Crossover with: St. Trinian's
  • Recommended by: Looney Toons
  • Synopsis: The story of Polly McCracken, late of St. Trinian's school, and how defending herself against a street gang in Paragon City resulted in her being shanghaied to the Rogue Isles -- and what she decides to do about it once she's there.
  • Comments: A short character-driven story written before the release of the Going Rogue expansion, when the only way to start as a villain was to be broken out of the Zig and dropped in Fort Darwin.

Shipping Fics

Stories whose primary focus is on romantic or sexual relationships between the cast.
