Edit War/Playing With

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Edit War: A fight between two or more wiki editors, where one troper will initiate a change, another will restore and/or override it, and so on...

  • Played Straight: Two tropers can't agree on whether or not a specific trope example applies, and start changes back and forth.
  • Exaggerated: Factions of tropers can't agree on whether or not a specific trope example applies, and start a holy war of edit carnage.
  • Justified:
    • The information is off enough to be counted as wrong, but the deleting troper in question forgot what the actual correct information was. He is only removing until that editor goes away or somebody who knows the detail sees the page.
    • The poster of the information is correct, but the editor only saw another part of the wiki with wrong information relating to the current item. The poster hopes that somebody who knew the source would come along and validate the correct information.
    • One of the tropers is a Troll or Sock Puppet.
  • Inverted: The original troper thanks the second troper for correcting them, or for cutting unnecessary parts of the page out.
  • Averted:
    • The original troper is careful to research and confirm their example and avoids any conflicts
    • The page is locked.
  • Subverted: Instead of restoring over the original change, the second troper takes the issue to the Discussion thread and works to create a better example.
  • Doubly Subverted: The troper only takes the issue to the Discussion thread so they can start a Flame War as they continue the Edit War.
  • Parodied:
    • Two tropers start a mock Edit/Flame War For the Evulz.
    • Trope is used at all in any fictional work.
  • Deconstructed: The Edit War reaches epic levels and causes moderators to lock the page and tempban the participants.
  • Reconstructed: This causes the tropers involved to realize the value of politeness and notability.
  • Enforced:
  • Lampshaded: "Oh crap. We all know where this is going..."
  • Invoked: The second troper must have/has a personal vendetta against the first.
  • Defied: The first troper calls out the second troper as a troll on the Discussion Page and gets a moderator, rather than escalate the war.
  • Discussed: Moderator: "Please do not start an Edit War."
  • Conversed: "What? Someone edited a page on my watch list?! It's my ArchNemesis?! Nooooooooooooooo!!!"
