Grand Theft Auto V/Trivia

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Trivia about Grand Theft Auto V includes:

  • Actor Shared Background: Both Shawn Fonteno and Slink Johnson has had criminal records prior to their acting careers. Slink claimed in a Vlad TV interview that he has had run-ins with the law for carjacking and petty theft, and Fonteno was a Crip (as was his cousin Young Maylay of GTA San Andreas fame) and formerly dealt with drugs in his youth.
  • Banned in China:
    • While the uncut game did get an R18+ rating in Australia, their branches of Target and Kmart chose not to stock the game under pressure from Moral Guardians who were "sickened" by the game over sexual violence and misogyny concerns.
    • The gambling minigames in the GTA Online Diamond Casino and Resort update are restricted in certain countries such as Belgium, which have laws banning video game gambling which may attract underage players. Anyone from those countries are walled off from accessing the gambling portions of the casino, but everything else is available.
  • Cast the Expert: Actual gang members were hired to voice some of the minor characters to add authenticity, as well as real gangbangers who drew up graffiti memorials to their fallen comrades. Shawn Fonteno and Slink Johnson's previous experiences with street gangs also helped bring the game to life.
  • Creator Backlash: Steven Ogg eventually grew tired of being primarily associated with his role as Trevor, declining to reprise his role in GTA Online since then.
  • Promoted Fanboy: In a rare move, Rockstar incorporated a fix made by a GTA fan going by the pseudonym t0st which cut down on loading times in GTA Online. Besides being mentioned on their official support page, t0st also received a $10,000 cash reward for his findings.
  • Technology Marches On: Despite Blu-Ray drives having existed by the time of its release, the PC retail edition came on seven dual-layer DVDs. At least it isn't as egregious as the floppy disk release of Microsoft Office 97, which had a floppy disk version that came on a staggering 46 floppies!
  • Wag the Director: Rockstar consciously wanted to avoid using the N-word and tried mincing it as "mate" in the dialogue, but Slink and Shawn pointed out that having them avoid using the slur wouldn't make the gangbanger characters sound authentic (especially as they do make liberal use of it at least in some African-American circles, sociopolitical taboos be damned).
  • What Could Have Been: There's a litany of cut, changed and unused content for the game throughout its development cycle and subsequent releases.
    • Lamar Davis was to have a much bigger role in the game, but Slink Johnson claimed in an AMA that he was arrested at some point during production (which isn't surprising considering Johnson's criminal past, something which he has since regretted and left in favour of a career in comedy), hence why his role had to be reduced in the main story mode. Thankfully his appearance alongside Shawn Fonteno in the Contract DLC for GTA Online more than made up for it.
    • More infamously, Rockstar initially pledged to release story mode DLC for the game, but despite eager anticipation from fans, this was not to be the case at all. Most of the previously-unused story DLC content would later be repurposed for content updates to GTA Online.
