Heavenly Creatures/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: In-universe and out-of-universe, the girls' relationship is subject to scrutiny. The parents fear that the two are becoming lesbians, while Pauline maintains that "Deborrah" and she are roleplaying about being royalty. Anne Perry as an adult insists that it was just a friendship, and not a lesbian relationship.
  • Colbert Bump: The film launched heavy interest in what became of the two girls, and resulted in the very quick discovery that Juliet was none other than mystery writer Anne Perry.
  • Most Annoying Sound: The sobbing and screaming at the end will have you diving for the remote.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The people of Borovnia, giant, unpainted plasticine figures that talk, sing, dance, and make love.
  • The Woobie: A person has got to feel for Dr. Hulme, the one who suffered the most out of the drama. While he is very imperfect, as shown by how he alerts the Riepers about the girls' friendship and refers Pauline to a psychologist that he knows, you can tell that he is genuinely worried about his daughter's health and freaks out when she develops another TB flare. Then his wife has an affair with their lodger, and the choices are either put up with it or initiate a divorce, and there is scandal either way. Because of Hilda's affair, he loses his university job but tries to put on a brave face for Juliet and says they'll start a new life. Then his daughter's arrested for murder, and he has to proceed with the divorce.
