Tropes used in Legend of the Eight Samurai include:
- Action Girl: Shizu-hime
- Blood Bath: Tamazusa bathes in blood to rejuvenate herself.
- Crossdresser: Keno is a Shirabyoshi. Shizu-hime pulls a Sweet Polly Oliver while on the run from Tamazusa's thugs.
- Hey, It's That Guy!: Sonny Chiba (Dosetsu) is practically a martial-arts film industry unto himself. His protege Hiroyuki "Henry" Sanada (Shinbei) is a prolific actor as well.
- Lady of War: Keno
- The Ojou: Shizu
- They Just Didn't Care: The English dub is horrendous. In particular, the words "samurai" and "ninja" are used interchangeably.
