Shiniez

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Shiniez (pronounced like the plural of "shiny") is a BDSM webcomic about the kinky relationships of four people. It is hosted on Deviant ART and is named for the eponymous artist. While the comic is mostly done for Fan Service, the artist/writer also considers it a way to communicate the message that BDSM can be performed in a Safe, Sane, and Consensual manner.

The strip started life as a series of unconnected fetish drawings featuring the same two characters, Allison and Lisa, purely for the fun of it. Continuity began to creep in when the author introduced Anne as a tattoo artist, who got a little too intrigued after doing some work on Lisa and ended up becoming their friend and playmate, and short sequences detailing their growing relationships began to outnumber the more isolated artworks. By the time Alan was introduced as Ally's college friend and maker of fetish clothing, there was enough continuity to consider the work a genuine ongoing webcomic, albeit one frequently Out of Order.

Here is an unofficial chronology (page SFW, links NSFW.)

Tropes used in Shiniez include:

  • Adorkable: Ally can be a total spaz when she thinks about how lucky she was to find Lisa.
  • All Women are Doms, All Men are Subs: Averted with Alan, much to Anne's surprise.
  • Bondage Is Bad: Averted completely.
  • Bound and Gagged: Lisa, Anne, and sometimes Allison are featured this way.
  • Brains and Bondage: Allison is some kind of programmer and geek. The rest of the cast doesn't seem to be slouches in the intelligence department either.
  • Caught with Your Pants Down: Allison is caught indulging in some "alone time" by Alan after her quite memorable first night with Lisa.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Alan, very much so.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: Alan again. At least two characters have attempted to get him to crossdress. Both have failed, epically in Anne's case.
  • Fan Convention: Allison seems to be a fan of taking her subs to these for costume contests.
  • Jizzed in My Pants: Anne gets a geek at one of these conventions to do this by describing the sex games she'll partake in that night.
  • No Periods, Period: As Lisa is preparing to head to Ally's place to make up for five long and agonizing days away from her, her period hits at the worst possible time.
  • Only Sane Man: Alan frequently takes this role.
  • Out of Order: Constantly, the strips are posted in the order they are completed not in the order or chronology or even in the order they were thought up. Expect to do some headscratching as you figure out the overall continuity.
  • Safe, Sane, and Consensual: A few strips show the work that Allison and Alan go through to make sure their girls are safe.
  • Safe Word: Ally's safeword, which both Lisa and Anne use, is "sunstone." Alan's safeword, which Anne uses, is a three-note hum that can be used through a gag.
  • Sexy Coat Flashing: On her second night with Ally, Lisa pays a visit to her house wearing nothing but heels and lingerie under her coat, something she didn't really have the guts to do on the first night.
  • Shout-Out:
    • One strip has Allison, Lisa, and Anne dressed as characters from World of Warcraft.
    • Another has Lisa dressed as Spider-Man so Allison can kiss her upside down.
    • Another has Allison dressed as Wonder Woman, roping Anne -- dressed as Supergirl -- and Lisa -- dressed as Batgirl.
  • Spank the Cutie: All a part of the game for Ally and Lisa.
  • Three-Way Sex: Ally, Anne and Lisa get into this kind of arrangement during the story (at least before Ally and Lisa realize their love for each other and Anne and Alan hook up).
  • Word of God: In the Journal sections of his deviantART page.
