Line 166:
** Pretty much any episode that prominently features Nanami without actually having her duel. Could be subverted because even the fillers can be analyzed. "Tsuwabuki's Secret Diary", on the other hand, can be skipped.
** Arguably, the entire Black Rose arc is this, as it has very little to do with the main plot and ultimately only serves to foreshadow the darkness of Akio's and Anthy's characters, which later scenes do anyway.
* Five-Man Band: Deconstructed. The Student Council are broken versions of their roles; their ability to serve these roles are clouded by their own desires. However they do teach Utena how to be the Prince: she learns each role from the counselor, and then rises to defeat them. Probably not coincidentally, each character's hair color matches the Sailor Fuku color of the respective 5MB in Sailor Moon.
* Five-Bad Band: The Student Council isn't really "bad" per se, but definitely functioning in an antagonistic role for most of the series:
** The Hero: Utena
** The Big Bad: Touga; also effectively The Dragon for Akio.
** The Lancer: Touga, a natural leader and prince candidate, distracted by his physical desire
** The Dragon: Juri.
** The Big Guy: Saionji, a serious kendoka, distracted by his desire for controlling the spirit
** The Brute: Saionji, with a large dash of The Starscream; while his Council position would seem to qualify him for The Dragon, his temperament is much more in line with this role.
** GeniusSmart Guy: Miki, althougha temperament-wisechild heprodigy, isdistracted muchby closerhis todesire Thefor Smarta Guy.shining emotion
** The Chick: Juri, the female member with a deep knowledge of other's hearts, distracted by her desire for a rational world.
** Dark Chick: Nanami.
** Sixth Ranger: Nanami, who starts off so far out of the plot it's funny, distracted by her own little world , even after being turned into a cow.
** Man Behind the Man: Akio, naturally.
* Flower Motifs: Roses, everywhere! Of every color! In your architecture! In your teacups! In your jam!
* Foot Focus: The movie has several very clear instances. The anime has a few as well.
