Taishou Otome Otogibanashi

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.
In this article, Japanese names are written in Japanese order with the family name first.

Taishou Otome Otogibanashi (大正処女御伽話) is a Japanese historical romance/comedy manga written and illustrated by Kirioka Sana (桐丘さな). It is set in the Taishou era, specifically 1921 to ca 1925.

Shima Tamahiko, a 17-year-old son of a rich family, gets into a tragic car accident that kills his mother and leaves his right hand permanently paralyzed. His evil father, embarrassed to have a cripple for a son, shunts Tamahiko off to a mansion in a remote town to live out his life without further tarnishing his family's name. To keep Tamahiko alive, the father buys a young girl from an endebted family to be his wife. So one day, a young girl named Yuzuki shows up on Tamahiko's doorstep to be his fiancee.

What follows is a heartwarming tale as the cheerful Yuzuki labours to coax the depressed and embittered Tamahiko out of his shell and the two gradually come to love one another.

Taishou Otome was published from 2015 to 2017. It consists of 45 chapters collected in 5 volumes. A sequel series, Shouwa Otome Otogibanashi, premiered in August 2018 in Shounen Jump +.

The title is also sometimes romanized as Taishau Wotome to follow the furigana which the author uses.

Tropes used in Taishou Otome Otogibanashi include:
  • Big Breasts, Big Deal: Yuzuki is of the Embarrased type. Despite her short stature and childish looks, she has enormous breast that she thinks are unbecomig for a maiden.
  • Complete Monster: Shima Tamayo.
  • Defrosting Ice King: The core of the story is how Tamahiko gradually warms up thanks to Yuzuki's love.
  • Genki Girl: Yuzuki is indomitably cheerful and optimistic.
  • Heel Face Turn: Tamako, Ryo and arguably even Tamao start out as antagonists but see the error of their mischievous ways and end up supporting Yuzuki and Tamahiko. They are largely converted by Yuzuki's loveliness.
  • Karma Houdini: Shima Tamayo.
  • Older Than They Look: Yuzuki is 14 but she looks barely pubescent. She is then contrasted with actual 12-year old Shima Tamako, who is taller and more womanly than her.
  • Suppressed Mammaries: Yuzuki binds her breasts, mostly because she thinks her tits are more fitting in an married woman with kids than in a young maiden. Unfortunately in doing so, she ends looking even younger than she actually is.
