Good question. In rereading the article, though, I think it's pretty obvious that there's no ambiguity to Salem at all. She's well past Rubber Forehead Aliens and all the way into Humanoid Aliens, what with the skin color (and veins), the solid eyes, the gliding walk, and the spines (?) that appear to be part of her hair (?).
