Tropes used in The Unsleeping City include:
- The Alcoholic: Sofia drinks to cope with her husband leaving her.
- Alternate Dimension: Nod, the sixth borough, is the land of dreams. Heaven, Hell, and Faerie (the fey realm) also exist.
- The Atoner: Kugrash, who scammed investors and was eventually cursed into a ratman by his former business partner. For decades before the campaign starts he helps the dispossessed and homeless of New York City.
- Brainless Beauty: Ricky posed for a firefighter calendar and his hotness is noticed by everyone, but he struggles to keep up with his love interest's sea of knowledge.
- Horny Devils: Isabella Infierno, whose race was guessed by Sofia when she used "succubus" as an insult.
- The Mafia: The mafia that displays prominently in the campaign is the pixie mafia led by Don Confetti.
- The Chosen One: Two actually: the Vox Populi and the Vox Phantasma. The former speaks for the people of the Waking World and the latter speaks for the denizens of Nod.
- Running Gag: Any invitations to Staten Island are always declined for being too far.
- Transgender: Pete is a trans man.
- Wild Magic: Pete has to make a Wild Magic surge roll every time he casts a non-cantrip spell (Nat 1 on a d20 produces a random effect). A homebrew rule is in place where the threshold increases by 1 each time he does not surge. He eventually gains the ability to choose between two possible effects.
