  • Gateway Series: The first movie was one of the first anime movies released outside of Japan.
  • Growing the Beard: The First novel, quite frankly, actually sorta sucked. D is pretty much a God Mode Sue, the Unfortunate Implications are pretty bad, and the plot is relatively straightforward. The next ones? Start to focus on world-building, remove some of the more blatant cheats the Nobles used, and it just works.
  • Evil Is Sexy: The Nobility, not to mention Rei-Ginsei.
  • Fridge Horror: The novels and the manga are chock full of it.
  • Marty Stu: D, an impossibly beautiful Bishounen version.
  • Squick: Too many to count. One scene in Journey to the Northern Seas ranks pretty high among fans.
  • Tear Jerker: The last scene in Bloodlust (at the cemetery) is a famous one.
  • Unfortunate Implications: The high amount of Chickification.
    • As well as occasional Karma Houdinis in the novels. Apparently rape and slavery aren't that bad as long as you worship the ground that D walks on.
