Billy Connolly

Billy Connolly, born 24th November 1942 in Glasgow, is a Scottish folk musician, actor and stand-up. Commonly known as "The Big Yin", he has a large fanbase and was voted Number One on Channel Four's One Hundred Greatest Stand-Ups in both 2007 and 2010.

  • Bits of Me Keep Passing Out: A gag about drinking, and "zombie" cocktails that he tried which "get you drunk from the feet up", remaining lucid until you try to move:

  • Blooper: His World Tour Of Scotland TV show kept them in, including a scene where he stalled his car and started rolling down a hill into traffic... with a driving instructor in the car directly behind his.
  • Censorship By Spelling: "D-I-V-O-R-C-E", a parody of the song by Tammy Wynette, which was a number one hit in the UK.
  • Cluster F-Bomb: Billy's quite at home with swearing.

  • The Danza: He has two Reverse-Danzas to this name - as Billy MacGregor in the British TV show Billy and as Billy Bones in Muppet Treasure Island.
  • Fan Nickname: "The Big Yin" (Glaswegian slang for "The Big One" - he's 6 feet tall)
  • First Gray Hair: He's said that while noticing grey hair on his head was bad, one of the worst shocks of aging was finding his first grey pubic hair. "In a certain light, my willy looks rather distinguished."
  • Naked People Are Funny: Dances naked in the snow in A Scot In The Arctic, setting a precedent for his other travel shows.
  • Testosterone Poisoning: Back in his days as a welder, his colleagues in the shipyards were real men - if the crotch of their overalls caught alight, they would beat the fire out with a hammer!
  • Violent Glaswegian: Subverted in a sketch on Not the Nine O Clock News where he barges into a dingy looking pub and in a gruff accent asks for a list of tough sounding men. When he is told that none of them are there, he orders a "campari and soda" in a camp accent.
