Brutal Series/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Provides Examples Of:

  • Alas, Poor Villain:
    • Japan.
    • Taberah spending her last moments worrying about the reason she signed up for the Games in the first place.
    • Vahn saying he "just wanted to go home".
    • Rome being betrayed by his ally.
    • Osso and Magya, the former dying beside his only friend in the arena, the latter realizing that she can't end everyone's suffering and acknowledging the beauty of life before leaving it.
  • Complete Monster:
    • Because each of the forty-eight tributes is the protagonist of his or her own sections, it's hard to find a character for whom it is impossible to feel sympathy. The only tributes who may qualify are Vivi, a sadistic Blood Knight who tortures her victims and constantly fantasizes about blood and guts, and Wiremu, who not only murders a helpless 12-year-old girl while "not sounding sorry at all," but also attempts to rape Finni, an act inexcusable even by the standards of the story.
    • Possibly Snapped!Russia, if one overlooks the person he was before his Face Heel Turn, but that's also subject to how you view his character.
  • Crowning Moment of Funny: Many of the reviews featured on the author's userpage.
  • Dude, Not Funny: Amer reacts this way when Igris tells Fronce to "go die".
  • Moral Event Horizon: Wiremu's attempt to rape Finni is not only horrific even by the standards of the story, but makes Sve's curb stomping of him completely justified in the eyes of the readers.
  • Shipping Goggles: Nearly all readers agree that Spain and Lovi are intended to be a couple, notably because the pairing is popular in Hetalia; however, the author has explicitly stated there's no (intended) romance in their alliance.
  • Stoic Woobie:
    • Vash. After growing up on the streets and orphanages of a place as harsh as District 2, then letting himself be trained as what amounts to a child soldier just to get food and shelter, there's nothing the kid needs more than a hug. Yet he's basically the series' Emotionless Guy.
    • Igris and Lude (the latter only in the 4th What If) try to be this, but both end up as Not So Stoic.
  • The Woobie:
    • EVERYONE. IN. THESE. GAMES. Even Wiremu kind of counts, since nobody likes him and thinks he's a disgusting creep. Special points to the victors, since they're still traumatized.
    • Raivis Lithu is already a whimpering little puppy that "wouldn't hurt a fly", and he earns his woobieness by remaining this way, even while getting his finger chopped off and being killed slowly by poison from a muttated vine.
