Galactica 1980/Trivia

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Blatant Lies: Universal billed their 2007 2-disc DVD release of Galactica 1980 as "The Original Battlestar Galactica's Final Season".
  • Executive Meddling: Part of the reason why the show was such a disaster. It was originally supposed to be based around Time Travel stories, as seen in the three-part pilot. The network, on the other hand, thought that science fiction should appeal primarily to kids, and so forced the producers drop the time travel aspect, have children making up over half the main cast (resulting in the Super Scouts), and give the series a primarily educational focus. The requirement for an educational focus was partially due to the decision to air the show in a time slot that basically required it. Now, if they hadn't decided it was a kids' show, things might have been different... The show's ABC censor also apparently saw something wrong with everything, making production almost impossible. She even had problem with the mention of meatballs in one episode, thinking that it was some kind of innuendo. The director got her back for this, sprinkling several more meatball jokes throughout the rest of the episode and its second part.
  • Hey, It's That Guy!:
  • The Other Darrin: Two cases in ten episodes!
    • Jeremy Brett and Richard Lynch as Commander Xavier.
    • Robbie Rist and James Patrick Stuart as Doctor Zee.
  • Stage Mom: The failure of Galactica 1980 was attributed to a mixture of Executive Meddling and this trope. The Executives' insistence on adding Kid Appeal Characters -- interpreted by actual children -- bit them in the butt when said children brought with them their respective Stage Moms, whose interference in the production poisoned the already fragile working environment so much everybody just gave up and instead directed their efforts to have the series canceled as soon as they could.
  • Syndication Title: Was packaged together with Battlestar Galactica under the previous show's name.
  • Took the Bad Film Seriously: Lorne Greene. As one of the few members of the main cast that came back at all, and the only one who agreed to still be in the main cast, armed with a genial new Santa beard, he tries hard to convince the audience they're still watching the same show, but...
  • What Could Have Been: The Richard Hatch or the Bryan Singer sequel series.
