Guardians of Ga'Hoole/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Complete Monster: Kludd. Let's see, he tried to murder his own brother and explicitly states that he's wanted to do so for years, is implied to have killed his own parents and brainwashed his own little sister, threatened Mrs. Plithiver because she suspects something, killed an owl who was only trying to help him...this guy just keeps killing, doesn't he? Everyone pretty much cheered when Twilight killed him.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: Many fans think that everything after "The Burning"--when Nyroc came on the scene--is inferior to the first few books.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Nyra.
  • Mary Sue: Nyroc is technically a canon Purity Sue (Or Marty Stu in this case). He was raised to be evil but a single owl turned him good. He's in some way related to Hoole, a legendary hero. His flaws tend to be small or annoying, like most Sues of his nature.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The reason why owlets captured by St. Aggie's never grow proper wing feathers. They use vampire bats to suck out their blood every month. To say nothing of all the Mind Control used by them and the Pure Ones.
    • Some of the Family-Unfriendly Violence, which is often described in rather graphic detail. Particularly in The Hatchling, where Nyra rips out and eats another owl's heart, which is so traumatic it makes Nyroc do a full-blown Heel Face Turn. If there is ever a sequel to The Movie, the developers will be hard-pressed to keep it PG.
  • Painful Rhyme: The songs and poems can sometimes have these. Doesn't help that they tend to suddenly switch the rhythm and meter mid-song.
  • What Do You Mean It's for Kids?: There are some extremely gory injuries described in the series. To elaborate: The very first book contains attempted fratricide, brainwashing, child enslavement, some fairly graphic violence, and cannibalism.
