(unlike "homosexual" and "transgender", which are often used as nouns)

in the very first sentence strikes me as being an artifact of the change we made some time back from "transsexual" to "transgender". I have heard "transsexual" used as a noun, but never "transgender". If this matches up with other folks' experience, we should rephrase that.

It HAS been used as a noun, but I personally have seen that only in derogatory contexts. I'm not trans, so take that as you will.
