Blessing

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.
Bless you!

Blessings are benefits or buffs that are given to a person by a divinity or supernatural beings in general. They are usually rewards given by gods as a favor from them. Blessings are typically beneficial to the person, but people can be Blessed with Suck. Different faiths have blessings given to people by a holy man. A prime example is a priest can act as a proxy for divinity through rituals. In media, they are seen as supernatural power or magic gifted by the gods; sometimes, they work as plot devices.

Inversion of a Curse.

Examples of Blessing include:

Anime and Manga

  • As pictured above, from Goblin Slayer, Clerics can use Miracles, magic bestowed by deities, that can be used for support, defense, and offense. However, these deities can rescind a Miracle if used outside its purpose.
  • In The Seven Deadly Sins, the Goddess Clan can use their magic power for healing, protection, and purging 'abominable' souls. They can also grant their power to humans, but they have to be compatible.
    • The Supreme Deity made four blessings known as Graces to four Goddesses down as the Four Archangels, giving them a unique power while increasing their other attributes. These Graces were made for the Goddess Clan, which means that if someone like a human uses them, then it will degrade their bodies.
    • Meliodas is forced to reveal that he and Elizabeth were Blessed with Suck after the Supreme Deity (Elizabeth's mother) and the Demon King (Meliodas's father) found out about their Secret Relationship. The two mortal enemies teamed up to "gift" Meliodas with unwanted eternal youth and immortality, while Elizabeth is cursed to reincarnate, fall in love with Meliodas, and die as soon as she remembers him. Meliodas recounts only one time that Elizabeth made it to a healthy old age without remembering their relationship, and in another incarnation, she died as a child. He snapped at the most recent reincarnation because he and Liz had a chance to break the curse, only to lose the opportunity with her latest death.
  • Fate/EXTRA CCC Fox Tail‍'‍s Saber (Suzuka Gozen) has the Noble Phantasm: Blessing of Wisdom. It comes from her Shoutouren, a silver sword from Mañjuśrī that can give her the wisdom of the bodhisattva.

Comic Books

  • The Sandman shows the Blessed with Suck version in "Facade"; Urania Blackwell, formerly Elemental Girl, received her powers as a "gift" from Ra, the sun god. As a result, she can change shape, fashion metal disguises out of mid-air, and live forever. Thanks to these powers, however, she cannot maintain a physical form that looks normal, keep down a job, or even go outside. By the time the story starts and Death comes to comfort her on hearing her crying, Rainie is begging Death for help with getting rid of this gift.

Film

  • In Coco, the deceased can bless their relatives if they come to the Land of the Dead.
  • Dogma has Cardinal Ignatius Glick's golf clubs blessed to improve his game and lead Silent Bob to kill Azrael with them.
  • The Book of Life has La Muerte and Xibalba, as part of their wager, ask for ofrendas or offerings from Manolo and Joaquin, respectively. Manolo selflessly gives the person he think is a beggar woman some food, and she says he will have her blessing. Joaquin, in contrast, coerces a Medal of Everlasting Life out of a hungry old man by threatening to eat his share of bread. Even though Xibalba cheats to win and Joaquin eventually loses the medal, La Muerte is shown to be steadfastly loyal to Manolo, helping him return to life using another wager with Xibalba.
  • Monty Python and The Holy Grail parodies this with a priest blessing the Holy Hand Grenade. King Arthur brings out the Holy Hand Grenade after finding out the hard way that the Killer Rabbit occupying a cave in their path is more dangerous than it looks. It can only be used after the priest reads the right scriptures and starts the countdown On Five ("Three, sir!") On Three.

Literature

  • In Sleeping Beauty, the seven good fairies give the princess their blessings on her christening, related to beauty, virtue, and honor. The Wicked Fairy, who wasn't invited, gave a blessing that would kill her if she was pricked by a spindle. As a result, the last fairy to give her gift changes the curse from death to sleep.
    • The novel Spindle's End, a retelling of the fairy tale, lampshades this. When the fairy Katriona rescues the princess Rosie and brings her home, she complains to her Aunt that the other Blessings could have provided actual magical protection. "Golden hair" is quite useless in the face of Pernicia's curse. Aunt reminds her that most fairies come up with blessings on the spur of the moment. Katriona's inadvertent blessing -- to give Rosie the ability to speak to all the animals that gave her milk as a baby-- ends up being the most useful one.
  • In the Percy Jackson series, Gods can bless people, granting abilities and traits related to the deity.
  • In the Discworld novel Wintersmith, Tiffany due to an impulsive decision gains several blessings from the Summer Queen: a cornucopia that produces any food the user wants (cue chickens when a kitten figures out how to work it out) and Fertile Feet, meaning Tiffany's bare soles will cause flowers to emerge on any surface. Granny Weatherwax helps with the latter using thick socks.
  • The Young Wizards series explains that the Lone Power saw "Death" as a gift to different life forms. In fact, one could argue that death and entropy are a gift to prevent Who Wants to Live Forever?. The problem is that the Lone Power wouldn't work with its siblings to integrate death into the universe and add it without their permission. That's why it was cast out and turned into the main antagonist of the universe because it wars against its siblings and the life forms.

Live-Action TV

  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer
    • Each Slayer is "blessed" with Super Strength and a greater pain tolerance than most normal humans when their predecessor dies. While Buffy expresses many times that she'd rather not have become a Slayer, she notes there are many benefits to being able to deck a vampire in the face. The episode "Helpless" showed that even with Buffy's smarts and experience, losing her powers for a birthday test put a real damper on her vampire-hunting abilities.

Oral Tradition, Folklore, Myths and Legends

  • Hinduism has different blessings based on various rites and rituals related to the Dharma.
    • Asking for immortality from Shiva or Brahma will tend to backfire on you, no matter what loophole you use. Hiranyakashipu specified that neither man nor beast would kill him neither indoors nor outdoors, day or night, or on earth or sky. Vishnu came as a lion-man, dragged him to a threshold at twilight, and tore him open while resting the asura on his lap.
    • If a warrior asks for a blessing and has performed his Dharma, he may receive one in death. Kartikeya did this with the Asura brothers Simhamukha and Surapadma after he defeated them in battle.
  • Rabbinic Judaism has berakhah, a prayer to gain Yahweh's blessings for a ceremony or other activities such as eating food.
  • In The Bible, God blesses people favored by the deity. There is also an interpretation that God's blessings can be positive or negative, such as being put through damnation.
  • The fairy tale "Diamonds and Toads" shows what happens when two sisters meet the same fairy, with one being polite and one being rude. When the kind one offers her water, she gains the blessing for precious stones and flowers to fall out of her mouth. In contrast, the rude one finds reptiles, bugs and toads falling out of hers. Yeah, the fair folk aren't nice.

Tabletop Games

  • In Dungeons & Dragons, Clerics can cast bless, a spell where gods give their blessing, which means a +1 bonus to morale and attack. Later versions of this spell make the bonus variable up to +4. There are numerous others, like prayer, death ward, sanctuary, shield of faith, aid, and warding bond, but for most players, bless remains one of the best, being very cheap and easy to cast (Level 1 Spell), and very versatile.
    • On the other end of the spectrum, Heroes Feast (a 6th Level Spell) is one of the most powerful as the recipients are cured of all diseases and poison, become immune to poison and fear, makes all Wisdom saving throws with an advantage, have hit point maximums raised by 2d10 and gains the same number of hit points. Plus, up to 12 people can gain these benefits, and it last for 24 hours. The downside, of course, is they all need one hour to consume the Feast, making it better for preparation of a battle than the battle itself.

Theatre

  • Much like in its source material, Spamalot has a priest bless the Holy Hand Grenade before King Arthur tosses it at the Killer Rabbit. King Arthur asks Brother Maynard to "skip a little" when the priest starts on a long passage, causing Brother Maynard to skip in place before the king clarifies.

Video Games

  • The Acolyte class from Ragnarok Online is a profession that uses the teachings of Odin to use prayers to heal and amplify their allies. One of their supporting skill is "Blessing," which increases several stats.
  • The Cleric class in the Might and Magic franchise has many, such as Bless, Heroism, and numerous protective Spells. The most potent are Day of Protection (casts several of those numerous protective spells at once) and Hour of Power (the franchise being the Trope Namer for that trope.

Western Animation

  • Odin, Ra, and Rama forged Samurai Jack‍'‍s katana from the Emperor's spirit to destroy Aku. It is a weapon that can only be used for good and is the only weapon that can destroy Aku.
  • The Owl House: After being killed by Phillip Wittebane, Luz meets with the Titan, and he asks her if she'll accept the last of his life and power to revive her. She accepts and is revived with all the powers of a Titan, though temporarily, where she defeats Phillip and saves the Boiling Isles.
