Countdown (game show)/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Adaptation Displacement: Approximately zero of its viewers know it is actually a British localisation of a French gameshow.
  • Crowning Music of Awesome / Ear Worm: The main theme and 30-second timer.
  • Funny Moments:
    • Many of the times a funny word comes up on the board, or where a contestant declares a "Dirty" word often count. The word "Fart" once showed up on the board, along with "Poo" and then "Poof".[1] It also deserves special mention when the first letters were "ORGA" and Carol began to dread the next few letters.
    • Carol gets a scare!
  • Richard was once GOTCHA'ed for an entire episode, only discovering the joke upon seeing the Conundrum answer (HOGCAT = GOTCHA). Only a small portion was ever aired, but the full taping (complete with stopdown footage) can be seen here.
  • Memetic Mutation: The Theme Tune embodies this Trope, but also "Two from the top and one from the bottom, please, Carol".
  • Misblamed: Did you see that video / image with the word Cuntflaps on the board? Well, that didn't actually happen; it was a photoshopped hoax.[2] Even if that did happen, the second the word cunt showed up, someone would have come out and changed it.
  • Moment of Awesome: Anytime someone finds a 9-letter word.
  • Replacement Scrappy: Rachel Riley.
  • Tear Jerker: Carol Vorderman's tribute to Richard Whiteley the day after his death.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks: Rachel Riley. Des Lynam to a lesser extent; he had a pretty difficult act to follow in Richard Whiteley, but it didn't help that he often came across as somewhat grumpy.
  • What the Hell Casting Agency: To say that Nick Hewer was a surprising choice for host would be a spectacular understatement. He hasn't actually taken over at the time of writing, so this could yet turn out to be a stroke of genius.

  1. (While "Poof" doesn't mean anything in most of the world, it's a regional slang for a gay person in a similar way to "Fag", which is why people laughed.)
  2. (You can see it in the video where one letter moves around a bit.)
