Hanna/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Anvilicious: Fairy tale fairy tale fairy tale fairy tale fairy tale. Did you notice it's a fairy tale yet? You'd think it's gotten as heavy handed as it can when Hanna references a friend of her father's named Grimm and gets the response "you mean like The Brothers Grimm?" But then we see Grimm's house... and it's a candy-coloured theme park attraction that looks exactly like the gingerbread house... and then he starts playing "In the Hall of the Mountain King" on the stereo. He might as well have turned to the camera and said "Get it?"
    • That character's name is Knepfler. He only lives in the Wilhelm Grimm house.
  • Ambiguously Gay: Some people read Hanna's outright rejection of physicality with the guy she went out with as a sign she may have been gay cuz she was perfectly okay with Sophie touching her.
  • Complete Monster: You thought Issacs was bad? He's a choirboy compared to Marissa Wiegler. To start, Marissa terminated the Super Soldier program, killing 19 out of 20 children along with their parents. She follows this by ambushing and killing Hanna's mother as Hanna and Erik escaped to the forests. After systematically hiding her nefarious program details from her colleagues and murdering Hanna's grandmother, she captures and presumably kills Sophie and her family... and she enjoyed every second of it. All in all, she's arguably one of the most depraved and sadistic madwomen in film history.
  • Creator's Pet: Sophie is easily the least popular character in the film. The fact that the filmakers decided Hanna would like her so much as to trust her with a kiss suggests they were unaware of how annoying she is.
  • Crowning Music of Awesome: The entire soundtrack is by The Chemical Brothers and it's Crazy Awesome.
  • Fridge Horror: Sophie and her family were likely killed after Marissa and her cronies interrogated them, considering that's the fate met by everybody else they've questioned. In that case, it would be another candidate for Marissa's Moral Event Horizon, especially since Sophie and her brother are just innocent children.
    • Hopefully they were just killed. Given the comment about how the performer at the club was "a little old" for Isaacs' tastes, there are far worse possibilities.
      • Well, the original script has it that they survived, so that's something of a relief.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The hapless and defenseless Susie Salmon has been reincarnated into a nearly unstoppable killing machine who eats trained adult soldiers and skinheads for breakfast. A bad guy who is implied to be a pedophile is chasing her, again.
  • Moral Event Horizon: It's implied that Marissa had a slew of young babies from the soldier program killed. Also, see above under Fridge Horror.
  • Narm:
    • When Marissa falls down the slide after being shot in the chest with an arrow.
    • The tunnels in the CIA facility have a lot of brutalist style, but don't seem like any kind of sensible construction.
    • Dear lord, the fight scene in the playground by the end. How can you take someone being stabbed seriously if he's trapped by the swings? And after Erik beat the first goon and threw him on the merry-go-round, why did he then decide to take the time spin the merry-go-round around, what would would that possibly acheive mid fight scene? And then after the fight scene is over Erik and the goon's bodies are both on the merry-go-round which is still spinning. This means that it's either the most firctionless merry-go-round in the world, or Marissa also couldn't resist giving it a good aul' spin.
    • Hanna um... screaming whenever she encounters something new and exciting. It just doesn't work very well cinematically.
    • Cate Blanchett's southern accent is... not very convincing to say the least, which makes it difficult to really take Marissa seriously in spite of her horrific actions.
  • No Yay: Marissa's obsession with Hanna, also some of Hanna's interactions with Erik come off as romantic.
  • Putting on the Reich: Isaac's goons dress like neo-nazis skinheads.
    • Actually, they are not neo-nazis. They are S.H.A.R.P. skinheads.
  • Squick: Marrissa sure does care a lot about dental hygiene...
  • Uncanny Valley: What's with Hanna's eyebrows?
  • Unfortunate Implications: The bulk of the film concerns a young girl who is physically and spiritually perfect and unpolluted being chased by evil homos. Hanna's vague girl-romance might well be there just to prevent the film from seeming homophobic.
  • What Happened to the Mouse??: See Fridge Horror.
  • The Woobie: Hanna. Everyone she'd ever known is dead.
