Hurrocks Fardel

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

In the late twenty-first century, the creatures of legend returned from the world of dreams beginning a war that ended with humanity back in the dark ages. Centuries later, a dragon named Drake finds himself trapped in human form, his magic restricted by a seal on his hand. He is not the main character. The protagonist is Joan, a young girl with a blood red eye that lets her see... things. Things that don't quite exist in the mundane world, but which exist in the world of dreams and stories. This ability to see, and her ability to sense, causes Drake to kidnap her to help him find the seal's origins, and remove it.

The author quite definitely did the research on medieval times, among other subjects, and shows her work quite often.

Tropes used in Hurrocks Fardel include:
  • After the End: Despite the medieval setting, the comic's actually in the late 21st century, when the Shadows War reverted the world back into medieval stasis.
  • All Myths Are True: Literally. Depending on the strength of he belief, the Solifidians are more or less similar to the myths.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Teddy, full stop.
  • Children Are Cruel: Joan was shunned by the children in her village after she accidentally obtained her red eye.
  • Clap Your Hands If You Believe: The world of Bahamut is shaped by humans' belief. The Solifidians survived beyond the middle ages, when belief in the supernatural dwindled, by literally believing in themselves.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Drake.
  • Dead Little Sister: Dead family, girlfriend and entire race for Drake
  • Deadpan Snarker: Drake.
  • Evil Eye: Subverted with Joan's red eye: it's not evil, but it allows her to see the supernatural. People fear it, though, so she covers it up with an eyepatch.
  • Friendly Neighborhood Vampire: Theodore, until you push him too far...
  • Fate Worse Than Death: Of a sort. Drake sought to shake St. George's faith by killing his wife and son, so that when he died he wouldn't believe he was going to heaven (that being how the afterlife works in this universe, apparently).
  • Genre Savvy: Drake. Justified, as the world of Hurrocks Fardel is actually shaped by tropes.
  • Jerkass: Drake. Turns into something of a Jerkass Woobie once you find out his backstory.
  • Last of His Kind: Drake. The trope itself is probably the only reason he's still alive.
  • Our Monsters Are Different: Called Solifidians, they vary depending on the belief of the particular place they live in.
  • Reality Warper: Medians like Joan unwillingly shape the world around them to follow trends in stories. In other words, Tropes happen wherever she goes.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Drake did not take well to having his family slaughtered by command of St. George.
  • Roma: Teddy's a gypsy, who have good relations with the Solifidians due to their appreciation of stories.
  • Shown Their Work: And how. The author is very cultured, and it shows. Reading The Rant only deepens it.
  • Weirdness Magnet: As mentioned above, Medians like Joan. They create it as much as they attract it, though.
