Kikaider/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Alas, Poor Villain: Even though he is a Complete Monster, one can't help but feel a little sorry to see Gill trying to crawl away with missing limbs, begging for mercy, only to have his skull crushed in by Jiro.
  • Animation Age Ghetto: The anime seems unsure of who their target audience is, and it sort of scares away most people. The dark premise, violence, and sexual implications keep it away from kids, the very cartoony style, "wacky" characters, and bright colored animal robots seem too childish for more adult people to get into.
  • Ear Worm: The opening credits has an incredibly catchy themesong. You will find yourself humming "doo DOO doo doo-doo..." throughout the day.
    • The toku's opening theme also..."Change, Change, go go go..."
  • Hawaiians Love Kikaida - The live-action version is one of the few tokusatsu programs that has actually gotten a legitimate DVD release with English subtitles, although it's only available in Hawaii.
  • Narm: "Is that a good order... or a bad order?... Either way, I'm not taking any orders, because I'm just a mad machine." -- Jiro, after Mitsuko tries to order him to come with her after the second Monster of the Week's attack.
  • The Scrappy: Ichiro/01 even sounds a bit like scrappy.
    • This of course, only applies to the anime version.
  • Special Effects Failure: In the OVA it's pretty obvious in one episode that instead of animating the androids and objects falling, they simply moved a still image of them across the screen to appear as if it's animated.
  • Tear Jerker: The ending of the anime. Then the ending of the OVA just to top themselves on sadness.
    • The episode where Mitsuko reunites with her mother. And her mother's tearful suicide in front of her children, after realizing she really did care for them.
    • The woman who is forever waiting for the man to come back to her, not realizing he's already dead.
    • Rieko's death. And then Ichiro's. And Rei's. And Bijinder's.
    • Jiro's speech in the last part of the OVA and the accompanying music is heartbreaking.
  • What Do You Mean It's Not for Kids?: Don't let the colorful robots and silly characters fool you, there is a lot of murder, blood, and suicide in this tv series.
  • What Do You Mean Its Not Symbolic: The Hakaider movie has this in spades.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: In the OVA series Akira is used as the important component of a weapon of mass destruction.
    • To say nothing of Jiro, who pretty much is forced to Kill'Em All
