Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain/Awesome

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Mission 6 gives us Skull Face making one hell of an entrance complete with a creepy and awesome preview of Metal Gear Sahelanthropus. It can also be one for Venom, should he take down the Skulls.
  • The end of Mission 7 is one for Venom. You discover that Venom has been so effective at basically making Afghanistan his bitch they are calling in reinforcements. To put this in proper perspective, Venom is one man, and he's so badass an entire division of the Soviet Army is calling in reinforcements just to take him out.
  • Mission 9, provided you do really good at it, is another awesome moment for Venom, since he winds up pissing off the Soviets so badly they send a gunship and extra tanks, just to kill him alone. This is AFTER having taken out several tanks and other armored vehicles in under 15 minutes.
  • Mission 12 finally shows off Metal Gear Sahelanthropus in all it glory, complete with Skull Face giving it a bombastic introduction.
  • Mission 33 has the final confrontation with Sahelanthropus, which, in a first for the series, makes for an awesome battle where Afghanistan itself is the massive, open world battleground to take it down. However, the real awesome comes afterwards when Venom and Kaz Pay Evil Unto Evil on Skull Face by blowing his limbs off with a shotgun as payback for all the phantom pain he left them with.
  • Practically every scene Quiet is in she's doing awesome stuff:
    • After her capture, she slips her handcuffs, Snake shrugs and resumes heading back to base. Then a Sea Harrier shows up to ruin his day, and she reappears to bail him out. In the process, she helps shoot down a missile, and in a scene that has Ocelot holy shitting himself later shoots the pilot through the skull while he's vectoring in for the kill while flying at Mach 2. Then she just sits back down, slips her handcuffs back on, leaving a stunned Venom to shrug again and roll with it.
    • Quiet tries to head out with Venom later, and while it doesn't pan out then, she does prove, courtesy of Ocelot lending her his revolver, that she can shoot between the blades of a moving chopper without hitting them once.
    • It's kinda Nightmare Fuel at the time, but the time when some Diamond Dogs got owned after giving her shit was pretty kickass, with her springboarding off their backs, then pinning one particular soldier to the ground and damn near ramming a knife down his throat. She was actually doing something heroic at the time, because the soldier was an early carrier of the Kikongo strain parasite and she was trying to kill him before he spread it to others.
    • Mission 45's first part is a long montage of awesome Quiet action. She gets captured, and some Soviet soldiers decide to slap her around and choke the shit out of her, then one asshole gets the bright idea to rape her, after having tried to drown her nearly dehydrated body. That guy suddenly finds himself ass over tea kettle as Quiet kicks the ass of every single one of his buddies, even Mike Tysons a guy's ear off, lethally shanking her would be rapist in the balls, throwing a soldier she laced a grenade to at another soldier and using his body as a shield, then appears out of the remains of the supply building that went nova in the process, sniper rifle in one hand, rocket launcher in the other (which she hands to you).
      • And then Part Two has Quiet and Venom getting a combined awesome moment as they go Back-to-Back Badasses on the now incredibly pissed off Soviet 40th Red Army. And win.
  • Eli got one prior to even being met. Pretty much written off and left for dead in the ass end of Africa, he managed to find a ragtag splinter group of child soldiers and turned then into a pants shittingly terrifying miniature army. Well, not really much of a surprise given he IS Liquid Snake....
    • He gets another when you have to take him down. While it's possible to knock him and skip fighting him at all, if you are forced to fight him, he manages to be incredibly tough, shrugging off a ton of rubber bullets and tranq darts as well as being CQCed multiple times. For perspective, he's a scrawny teenager, Venom's a well trained, well equipped combat veteran, and it's still a tough fight.
    • Eli managed to screw over Venom and Skull Face at the same time. How, you ask? By being so full of rage he hijacked The Third Boy and Metal Gear Sahelanthropus away from Skull Face, who is utterly shocked someone will more hate and anger than himself seized control of both.
    • Eli proves to be a full on Magnificent Bastard by managing to outwit Miller, Ocelot, and Venom despite keeping a very close eye on him. With a little help from Huey, he masterminds an attempted rebellion that is foiled, but this turns out to have been a massive smokescreen for his real plan: Hijacking Sahelanthropus. It works so well Ocelot is downright scared of what Eli will do next.
  • Skull Face is a monster, but he does have some awesome moments:
    • His debut has him giving a disturbingly serene entrance while Venom is suspended upside down in Sahelanthropus' clutches, and after a little polite smack talk does an Unflinching Walk into the same hands that captured Venom, leaving Venom to watch in horror as Soviet soldiers turn into Skulls as the Skulls themselves show up to ruin his day.
    • In what doubles as a Call Back to Coldman, Skull Face learns Huey betrayed him, throws him down some stairs, then tells the backstabber he might live in the dark, but he will not be judged by the standards of a man who keeps switching sides. This only get more awesome for Skull Face in retrospect because he implies it would serve Huey right if Big Boss killed him, and we discover Skull Face figured out how much of a faithless asshole Huey was and even he was disgusted, long before anyone else.
    • He gets another one when Sahelanthropus emerges in a total badass entrance, capped off with his bombastic boast:

BEHOLD! TODAY IS THE DAY WEAPONS LEARN TO WALK UPRIGHT!

    • He gets another moment of awesome that isn't all that obvious when you first see him in Nyozai da Badibulu. He stops by a dying victim of the parasites, tells him in his native tongue he'll bear the pain of the dying man himself, then Mercy Kills him, noticing Venom and calling the Man On Fire to go after him. This scene only gets much more awesome for Skull Face when you listen to his and Code Talker's secret conversations later, where we find out Skull Face likely infected himself with countless parasite strains unwittingly, including that of his homeland, knows this, and is completely unafraid. With that in mind, we now realize just how serious Skull Face actually was.
    • Skull Face gets quite a few when Venom finally catches up with him at OKB Zero. We learn he was the reason Operation Snake Eater went so well (EVA and Ocelot weren't the only help Snake had at the time), he also implies he wrested control of Cipher away from Zero not entirely true, but he did stop Zero from ever being a threat to his own plans, reveals his disturbingly well thought out plan to plunge the world into a Forever War, and when we finally get to where he has Metal Gear Sahelanthropus, we find out the reason the Man On Fire obeys him is because it's the reanimated corpse of Colonel Volgin, and the Man On Fire has so much rage at Big Boss Skull Face can command him to keep going after Venom and Volgin will never stop. This last part gets a bit subverted in the next scene When Eli gets control of Volgin's leash, but it's still awesome at the time.
    • Even after he's dead, we find out Skull Face was responsible for quite a LOT. The attack on Mother Base was all his doing, defying Zero in the process, whom he later poisoned despite Zero being extremely Properly Paranoid. He also engaged in some brilliant Briar Patching to get Code Talker to spill his guts about how to use radiation on the parasite even though Code Talker wanted to die before being forced to give that up. We also find out he was shadow of FOX, making sure Big Boss' missions would succeed in any case, and he was so dangerous he was simply exiled instead of killed by Zero due to how dangerous he was, which didn't save Zero from being outsmarted by his former XO.
