Monsters University is a 2013 animated college film directed by Dan Scanlon. It is a prequel to Monsters, Inc. with Billy Crystal and John Goodman returning as Mike and Sulley. Steve Buscemi and John Ratzenberger also returned as Randall and the Abominable Snowman from the first film. New cast members include Nathan Fillion as Johnny Worthington III, Charlie Day as Art, Alfred Molina as Professor Knight and Helen Mirren as Dean Hardscrabble. It is the first prequel made by Pixar.

Tropes used in Monsters University include:
  • Actor Allusion: The Abominable Snowman works for the mail just like Cliff from Cheers.
  • Big Bad: Johnny Worthington III.
  • Call Forward:
    • The Abominable Snowman warned Mike and Sulley that messing with the mail can lead to banishment.
    • At Randall's room, there is a picture of a tree that reads "The Winds of Change. You hear that?"
  • The Cameo:
    • Roz appeared with the CDA during when Mike and Sulley escaped from the human camp.
    • The Abominable Snowman appears at the very end as the mail owner.
    • Celia and Mr. Waternoose appear in photos during the credits.
  • Curse Cut Short: Sulley said to Mike about Hardscrabble that she can just before getting cut off by her.
  • Distant Prologue: The very beginning takes place during Mike's time at elementary school.
  • Foregone Conclusion: It's guaranteed that Randall becomes enemies with Mike by the end and Mike and Sulley go to work.
  • Growing With the Audience: Those who grew up with Monsters, Inc. are of college age by the time this film came out.
  • Prequel: To Monsters, Inc. It is the first and so far only prequel Pixar made.
  • The Stinger: The slug finally made it to class but he missed the entire school year.
  • That Came Out Wrong: Don Carlton tries to tell Squishy that he is marrying Squishy's mother, but it sounded like incest.
  • Wacky Fratboy Hijinx: As Mike and Sulley pledge themselves to Oozma Kappa, they were hit by paddles. Since it's a kids movie, it doesn't go beyond that.
