Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

My Hero Academia is a 2016 Anime about a boy without super-powers. Initially.

In a world where 80% of people have some kind of superpower (or "Quirk" as they call it in-universe), Izuku Midoriya is one of the 20% who does not, and is constantly bullied over this by Bakugou, a boy who has used his quirk of fire to intimidate or even beat up Izuku since they were young kids, and nicknamed him "Deku" (an Alternate Character Reading of his name meaning "useless person; good for nothing"). Even so, Izuku dreams of being a hero, idolizing the legendary All Might and planning to apply to the prestigious U.A. High School, where all the best Heroes went to school (although being "Quirkless" will put him at a disadvantage).

He has a unfortunate encounter with a villain wanting his body, and a fortunate one with All Might, who saves him. Having met his idol personally, Izuku is in awe, and tries to stop All Might from leaving. In his excitement, however, Izuku asks if he can still be a hero if quirkless, at the same time All Might is going through a crisis that he hides from most of the world.

Animated by Studio Bones. An adaptation of a manga of same name. Directed by Kenji Nagasaki, that also directed the anime adaptation of No. 6.

Tropes used in My Hero Academia (anime) include:
  • Appropriated Appellation: Izuku takes the insulting nickname "Deku" and turns it into his hero name.
  • Attention Whore: Mount Lady interferes in another hero's job only to look good for the cameras in Episode 1.
  • Curb Stomp Battle: Thanks to his very powerful quirk, All Might makes short work of most villains he fights.
  • Cursed with Awesome: Somehow lacking a feet joint leads humans to develop super-powers in this universe, despite said joint, on the fifth toe of the feet, being completely negligible.
  • Establishing Character Moment: There is no better way of showing Bakugou is an horrible bully than him beating up Izuku for defending another child with his cronies in the very first seconds of the first episode.
  • Fantastic Racism: Bakugou looks down on Izuku for not having a quirk.
  • Hypocrite: Despite saying becoming a quirkless hero is impossible, Bakugou still threatens Deku to not take the U.A. exam, saying that if he passed it would ruin the "backstory" he concocted for himself of being the sole top hero of a "mediocre city" junior high school, what means he certainly thinks it's possible.
  • Legacy Character: Played with. The quirk that All Might has, One-For-All, is passed down from one user to another. So, though the different wielders do not have the same names, they pass along the exact same power.
  • Mind Over Matter:
    • Izuku's mother can do this but only to small objects.
    • Uraraka otherwise can do the same thing to a much bigger scale. Her limits are not very clear.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Momo is a very curvy girl and the member of the main cast which exposes most skin, thanks to her power involving extracting fat of her own body.
  • Muggle Born of Mages: Deku's parents both have quirks. He has none. Said fact is said to be rare and becoming rarer.
  • Playing with Fire: Everyone with a fire quirk, with the first examples given being Izuku's dad and Bakugou.
  • Reality Ensues: Discussed. After Bakugou tells Deku to off himself, Izuku comments how if he indeed did this Bakugou would be in serious trouble for inciting him to do it, since he says it in front of other people.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: Justified. Mount Lady uses her form-fitting costume for the sake of publicity.
  • Tragic Dream: Izuku's biggest fear is that his dream of becoming a hero is this thanks to his quirkless nature.
  • Wham! Shot: All Might bleeding from the mouth while using his powers in Episode 1 is the very first sign he isn't as invulnerable or tough as it seems.
