Sonic The Hedgehog is the second mainline American comic book series for the character Sonic the Hedgehog. This one created and distributed by IDW Publishing, under the supervising of Sega.

After the cancellation of the Archie comic series, Sega quickly gave the right to the character to IDW Publishing. Unlike the last series, this is a complete Continuity Reboot for the comic series. The story is set in a continuity that takes place after Sonic Forces, in which the heroes have triumphed over Dr. Eggman and Infinite after they took over the world. With the two villains going missing following the final battle. The Resistance, now redubbed The Restoration, have gone about rebuilding their world with Sonic himself doing what he always does: speeding from one place to next and living a free life.

This brief respite of peace is broken when Badniks suddenly start attacking out of the blue, prompting Sonic to get back into into heroics. But these events soon lead to the return of Dr. Eggman and a host of new baddies as well along with some familiar foes that present new threats. Thus Sonic, his friends and the Restoration find themselves defending their world once more.

Started in 2018, this comic series has proven just as successful as the first one and, as of July 2020, reached it 50th issue. The series likewise has a few four part mini-series as well.

  • Tangle and Whisper: Released in 2019, this mini-series focus on newcomers Tangle the Lemur and Whisper the Wolf as they end up contending against villain that Whisper has personal history with.
  • Bad Guys: Released in 2020, this mini-series focus on Starline the Platypus, the utterly maniacal fanboy of Dr. Eggman, as he leads a villainous group consisting of Zavok, the Skunk Brothers: Rough and Tumble, and Mimic the Octopus against Eggman.
  • Imposter Syndrome: Released in 2021 as a lead up to the 50th issue. This once more focus on Starline who has made his own henchmen in the form of Surge the Tenrec and Kitsunami the Fennec with the aim of preparing them to take out Sonic and Dr. Eggman.
  • Scrapnik Island: Released in 2022, this story sees Sonic and Tails crash land on an island full of busted up Badniks but find that many of them aren't quite deactivated. One of whom happens to be Mecha-Knuckles, last seen in the Sonic Advance Trilogy and Mecha Sonic from Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
Tropes used in Sonic the Hedgehog (IDW Publishing) include:
  • Canon Foreigner: Naturally being a extended world of the main franchise, some original characters were likely going to be present.
    • First up was the villainous Skunk Brothers, Rough and Tumble.
    • Next came Tangle the Lemur, an excitable girl who uses her tail as her main offense.
    • Whisper, a wolf mercenary who uses a specialize Wispon that can change to different weapons depending on which of her Wisp friends inhabit it.
    • Dr. Starline, a platypus scientist who is a fan of Eggman's work and seeks to emulate his style.
    • Jewel, a beetle and fellow friend of Tangle who runs a jewelry shop in their hometown.
    • Nite and Don, an owl and rooster who run a local radio station on the outskirts of the Chaotix's city.
    • Surge and Kitsunami, a tenrec and fennec respectively. Two cyborgs that Starline made from two unfortunate citizens he had kidnapped and brainwashed in an effort to emulate the dynamic between Sonic and Tails so they may be able to combat the two as well Eggman respectively.
  • Debut Queue: The first few issues reintroduce the principal cast of Sonic, Tails, Amy and Knuckles. Following issues bring in Blaze, the Chaotix, Team Dark and of course Dr. Eggman and Metal Sonic as well as newcomers: Rough and Tumble, Tangle, Whisper and Dr. Starline.
  • Know When to Fold'Em:
    • In Issue #7, Sonic finds out Neo Metal Sonic is behind the Badnik attacks. He tries to engage him but forgets that Metal can absorb bio data in his Neo form and quickly finds himself on the backfoot. Deciding not to push his luck further, he makes a hasty retreat
    • In Issue 32, Eggman crashes the victory party with a mech powered by the captured Omega. The heroes manage to hold it off until Sonic arrives, warped back by Blaze and her Sol Emeralds. He frees Omega who quickly trashes the mech. Before Eggman can continue, he notes Sonic isn't in his usual joking demeanor and may seriously hurt him for all he's put everyone through with the Metal Virus. Thus Eggman decides crashing the party is good enough and flies off.
  • La Résistance: The Resistance, or as they're known in the comic, The Restoration, which acts as the deterrent force against any evil threats to the world, be they Dr. Eggman or otherwise.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished:
    • Sonic convinces Shadow to spare the amnesiac Eggman and let him live in peace as his more friendly persona, Mr. Tinker. Alas Dr. Starline has the Skunk Brothers brings Mr. Tinker to him so he may re-jog his memory. He doesn't suceed at first, that is until a damaged Metal Sonic, likewise spared by Sonic after the events of "The Battle for Angel Island" arrives which is enough for Eggman to regain his memory and continue his conquest anew.
    • In the 50th issue, Belle find the damaged Metal Sonic after his fight with Surge. She fixes him and returns him to Dr. Eggman. This goodwill would end up biting her, as well as Sonic and Tails, in the butt in the following issue when the three try to escape from the Eggperial City in one of Eggman's ships. Only for Metal Sonic to knock it out of the sky.
  • Zombie Apocalypse: The Metal Virus Saga focuses on this with Eggman developing a nano-tech virus that turns the victim into mindless robotic minion fittingly called Zombots. A good majority of the arc has Sonic infected but managing to, initially, burn it off by running. And the heroes efforts in trying to counter it.
