Superman/Batman: Apocalypse/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: When Superman and Kara are battling on Apokolips, Superman begins to exposit about how Darkseid is controlling her. However, as his speech goes on he becomes less calm and more...enthused. Now he sees the truth, that she can not be reasoned with. His speech becomes more manic as he speaks, and it suddenly seems all too possible that Darkseid never did brainwash Kara at all, and it is Superman who forces her to change loyalty after he has knocked her out. The fact that nothing is ever shown of Darkseid's supposed brainwashing, and Kara does not recant her loyalty to Darkseid until she has already been brought back to Earth, seems to lend credence to this theory.
    • Alternately, Kara was still never brainwashed, she did agree with Darkseid, until back on Earth she realized that even if she agreed to go back and be a Fury again, he would still kill her. That's why she opted to stay on Earth. Next to being a conqueror for Darkseid, there's nowhere in the universe she could get better training and respect than on a world filled with Super-heroes
    • Also, Clark's constant "She's coming with me" attitude throughout the entire film got to be vaguely disturbing for some viewers.
    • This Troper figured that the reason the brainwashing was never shown played into the whole "Batman suspects she's evil". She DID mention that she had no memory of anything from her kidnapping to her return to earth.
      • She looked pretty darn terrified when Darksied made the offer, and Barda (who has first hand experience) seems to think he did.
  • And the Fandom Rejoiced: As a sequel to Public Enemies and given the reaction to them coming back there there, naturally,Tim Daly and Kevin Conroy returning as Superman and Batman, respectively, got this reaction again. Also reprising DCAU roles are Edward Asner as Granny Goodness and Susan Eisenberg reprises the role of Wonder Woman from Justice League Unlimited. Though not a returning actor, the news that Supergirl's voice actor is Summer Glau was heralded by a single word: Squee!
  • Crowning Moment of Awesome: During the final battle with Darkseid, Kara (Supergirl) causes Darkseid to accidently shoot himself with his Omega Beams, after tracking her with them; she uses him as a shield after getting him in a bearhug-like hold.
  • Crowning Moment of Funny: Kara meeting the Kents for the first time.
  • Evil Is Sexy: The female Furies, but Kara especially during her brief stint as their leader. I mean DAMN.
  • Fauxshadow: We're explicitly shown that the Furies are being sent to abduct Kara, and later we see a shadowy group of female warriors trying to abduct her, including one who uses what appears to be a whip (a la Lashina). But it turns out to be Amazons (including Wonder Woman with her lasso).
  • Tear Jerker: The last thing Kara remembers about Krypton is seeing her parents die.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks: There was a large uproar when Michael Ironside was replaced by Andre Braugher as Darkseid, a role Michael had played in both Superman: The Animated Series and Justice League. Likewise, though Summer Glau was almost universally well received when she was announced as Supergirl, there were still requests from fans for Nicholle Tom to return to the role that she had also played during the DCAU. On a much smaller scale was the choice for Wonder Woman's voice-actor, as four women had played the role in Timm-related productions within the past decade. Susan Eisenberg, who played the role on Justice League, was ultimately selected, but Lucy Lawless (Who played the role in Justice League: The New Frontier) Keri Russel (Who played the role in Wonder Woman) and Vanessa Marshall (Who played the role in Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths) all had fan support, with minor backlash when they were passed over.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Literally. Harbinger has, for months, been having a prophetic dream of Kara lying dead or dying in a pool of water. Then, when her visions begin to get stronger, indicating that the time of prophecy is approaching, Kara mentions she wants to go swimming and actually asks Harbinger if she is afraid of the water. When Harbinger dies soon afterwards, lying in the water exactly as predicted in her visions, it is hard to muster up much sympathy for her.
    • Uh, really? Others would argue, that they got the implication that Harbringer knew that if she went there that she, herself (not Supergirl) was gonna die. And only went chasing after Supergirl, to stop her, because she knew that Darkseid is waiting to capture Supergirl, despite the risk, knowing that going there to prevent Supergirl from being captured-Harbringer would still probably die like in her vision. One could argue, she probably felt her fate was inevitable, but she just wanted to prevent anything bad happening to her friend Supergirl. And yes, the visions were a bit ambiguous because she never really talked about them, but if one could interpret the vagueness of it all-by coming to the conclusion as Too Dumb to Live, then the opposite or alternative interpretation, should also be true for others to conclude as well.
  • Unfortunate Implications: Apparently, all teenage girls regardless of culture, upbringing, history or even species love to shop and buy revealing clothing specifically designed to upset their current father figure, and once you understand Earth American fashion and eat junk food you know everything there is to know about being an "Earth girl."
  • The Woobie: Kara. First she watches her parents die, then she's trapped in an unfamiliar environment, forcibly got kidnaped, is treated like a child, kidnapped AGAIN, brainwashed into being an evil assassin and leader of an army of super hot warrior assassins, is forced to attack her cousin while being brainwashed....seriously the girl goes through so much.
