- Billing Displacement: Despite being billed third, Gladys George only has three scenes in the movie, under Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet, who are central characters and have much more dialogue.
- The Danza: Wilmer Cook is played by Elisha Cook, Jr.
- Dawson Casting: Cook was actually thirty-seven during the time of filming, but Spade suggests his age to be around twenty when he reports Wilmer to the police.
- Beam Me Up, Scotty: Done by Spade himself. The actual quote is, "Such stuff as dreams are made on."
- Hey, It's That Guy!: Brigid O'Shaughnessy is Raymond Massey's mistress and Judy Garland's mother; Wilmer is Captain Kirk's lawyer, and Icepick from Magnum.
