The Savage Dragon/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Complete Monster:Johnny Lee Raeburn started as a janitor in an unassuming town who violently tortured 28 children to death, before being sent into space for NASA's Seeker program where he assimilates an alien probe and gains its powers. Giving himself the moniker of "Deathwatch", Raeburn returns to Earth as a cybernetic supervillain able to feast on the minds of his victims and make them experience the terror of those he's killed, making them die in absolute fear. Deathwatch slaughters several people connected to the trial that convicted him as a child killer before single-handedly massacring his entire hometown and killing his mother, even mentally torturing Donatello into brain death before he's foiled. Hitting his stride upon his return in Savage Dragon, Deathwatch convinces the Servant Race of the Kalyptan people into ultimately kickstarting a war that devastated Kalyptus and almost completely eradicated the Kalyptans, the Krylans, and the Tyruss in one fell swoop. Nothing less than gleeful at what his manipulations have wrought, Deathwatch intends to butcher all life on Earth next out of nothing more than petty spite. From a simple hick serial killer to one of the greatest mass murderers in the universe, Raeburn is one of the most evil beings to have ever fought the Dragon and his allies.
  • Crowning Moment of Awesome: There was understandable backlash from a number of fans during the mostly well recieved Savage World storyline. One fan in particuler went on to write a long, deep letter as to how Larsen had betrayed all his loyal fans for throwing out the regular continuity to do something cliched for the purpose of increasing sales. Larsen responds with an equally disgusted letter bashing the fan for having no free will and being too stubborn to admit he can just stop buying the book, as well as assuming he did it solely for the money. Erik Larsen is now awesome in this tropers books.
  • Fashion Victim Villain: The series has got this in spades. Erik Larsen obviously loves designing these guys. Given the tongue-in-cheek nature of this comic, it makes sense, and the costumes fit their silly names, and the series sometimes lampshades this fact. A lot of them are throwaway baddies, but several members of his Rogues Gallery fit this category as well.
  • Squick: The Body Function, a gang led by the pus-filled Villainous Glutton Cesspool, consists of the phlegm-spewing Nasal Ned, the Fartillery-powered Backfire, and Belcher. Oddly, he didn't recruit the diarrhea-cannon wielding Dung or Menstrual Menace Heavy Flo.
