The World's Expert on Getting Killed/Playing With

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Basic Trope: A character, despite his or her skills in dealing with a specific threat, is killed easily by the threat.

  • Straight: Bob, a master warrior who has killed thousands of orcs, is killed by an orc himself.
  • Exaggerated: Bob doesn't do anything to show where his reputation came from, and the orc kills him at point-blank range.
  • Justified: Bob is older than he was when he earned his reputation, suffered a disadvantage, and the orc got in a lucky shot.
    • Bob's guard was a Dirty Coward, who either thoughtlessly or intentionally points out his location while escaping or betrays him to save his own life.
  • Inverted: Bob, an inexperienced new recruit, manages to dodge the arrows of an orc army through sheer dumb luck.
  • Subverted: Bob meant to be shot, either to lure the orcs into a trap or because he is pulling off a Thanatos Gambit.
    • Bob, despite a disadvantage, overwhelming enemy numbers, and his teammates giving him up for dead, manages to survive the battle anyway, proving his reputation is more than just talk.
    • Bob was a Miles Gloriosus who invented his orc-killing exploits, and is unprepared for a battle with a real one.
  • Double Subverted: ...but the plan fails and it looks like he just had bad luck.
  • Parodied: Bob, the Slayer of Orcs, wearing thick armor and bristling with weapons, enters the field and is shot down by an orc archer in five seconds.
  • Deconstructed: While Bob was a skilled orc killer in his prime, he is aware that age is catching up with him and throws himself into battle against as many orcs as he can, hoping to die a fitting, honorable death.
  • Reconstructed: Bob's reckless behavior is what causes him to die, as he fights without help from other soldiers and makes himself an easy target.
  • Zig Zagged: Bob manages to hold his own in battle, wiping out a large percentage of the enemy, but is then killed by a cheap shot from an orc archer while returning to camp.
  • Averted: Bob never encounters an orc in battle, and doesn't die.
  • Enforced: Bob's old age and his reputation cause the orcs to intentionally kill him first to demoralize his allies.
  • Lampshaded: "Why do my mentors always die? If they are real experts, they shouldn't get killed this easily."
  • Invoked: "Let's kill Bob off to make sure that The Hero has to take on the Big Bad alone."
  • Defied: Bob refuses to go into battle unless he is well guarded, well armed, and completely prepared.
  • Discussed: "Let's go for Bob. He's the Orc Slayer. If we kill him, they'll surrender."
  • Conversed: "We'd better put an exta guard around Bob." "I agree, the orcs will want to kill the Orc Slayer first."
