• Comments: AU, mostly. Good enough that if the names of the characters were changed, it would be worth publishing. Actually, she's realized this and has been rewriting many of her stories and shopping them to a publisher. I don't think that Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is on the list of those that are to be remade with non-Twilight characters, though, so you should definitely check that one out--it's really good.

• Minisinoo has stated that she is a professional writer and it shows. She takes the canon material and transforms into works of beauty such as the pre-canon fics, Beauty, Shining in Company with the Celestial Forms and This is My Beloved Son, in Whom I Am Well Pleased. Her two other fics are both subversions of the canon material done in the best way: Amputated at the Neck and my personal favorite Cowboys and Indians.
  • brittanyw here to second the rec of Cowboys and Indians. It's thoughtful, well-told, very different from the norm in the Twilight fandom, and frankly in any fandom, and features the best of odd friendships (Jasper and Leah). It makes those otherwise flat characters into fully formed people.
    • Agreed. I read and liked Cowboys and Indians a lot. However, the link appears to be broken, as far as I can tell.

Estora

• Comments: Anti-Twilight writer of considerable talent, all one-shots thus far. Deals with the darker themes of the series. Stories include Seven, Eighteen, Chagrin, Imprisoned, He Was A Quiet Man, and the most recent Daughter.
  • Eighteen seconded by Peteman. While Seven is definitely worth a look, Eighteen I find is even better, especially given Renesmee's rather eloquent internal monologue about child grooming and just what she thinks of Jacob regarding it.
  • Just throwing in a trigger warning for Seven. As stated above, it's dark stuff.
  • Doctor U. N. Owen would like to point out that Seven has over 130 reviews. And it's a one-shot.
  • The Revanchist would also like to point out that Chagrin is actually a parody. Bloody brilliant one, too. It currently has 212 reviews.
  • Lady Lurker would like to add that He Was A Quiet Man is her favourite. Estora beautifully reveals the strained relationship between Bella and Charlie from Charlie's POV, and really makes the reader thing about how poorly he was treated in the books. That story almost moved this troper to tears.
  • Little Miss Sophie truly felt afraid for Nessie in 'Seven', and loved her in 'Eighteen'. Yes. As an Anti, this troper would like to say that she wanted to take Nessie away from all the madness of her twisted, twisted family.
  • Kereea would like to point out that Daughter should not be missed either. Rene's new husband is exceptionally critical of Bella, sort of showing what an "average outsider" would think of her, and the entire work is clearly painting Bella as a sociopath...at best.

HM Grayson

• Comments: Probably the best Jacob/Leah writer I've ever read but the stories aren't just about the romance. Several of them aren't even from the point of view of the couple and all of them deal with some of the glossed-over issues of imprinting, particularly on an infant. She Hates Me, for instance, in an epic dealing with Renesme's life from seven to seventeen (or four to seven as the case may be) and "Nessie figuring some human truths. Growing up is not easy. People are complex. We all make mistakes. And it really sucks when his best friend is a girl."

Kyilliki

• Comments: The best Volturi writer I've ever read. The vocabulary she puts into her stories are just incredible and her writing style keeps you reading for more. Her fics tend to prove that the Volturi wives aren't just Strangled By the Red String and have a real romance which is hidden within the walls(A Thousand Stairs). She also wrote two angsty AU's for Breaking Dawn (A Fractured Sort of Forever and Finitum) which left me wondering which ending was the real one.

General Fics

Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

• Synopsis: What the fifth twilight book could be like. The volturi are still upset about "losing" to the Cullens over the Renesmee conflict in Breaking Dawn, so they devise a plan to kill them all. WARNING: contains violence, character deaths etc.
• Comments: If you were disappointed by the battle that never happened in Breaking Dawn, this is the story for you. Whether or not it's an alternate universe fic, and a Dark Fic. Also, it's one of the few stories out there where the Original Character is NOT a Mary Sue.

The Not So Short Second Life of Bree Tanner by Oy Angelina

• Pairing(s): Bree/Alec, Edward/Bella (Not really a romance as-of-yet)
• Synopsis: An alternate take on what could have been if Eclipse ended a little differently for Bree Tanner and what she might have done with her new lease on life. Features the Cullens, the Volturi, the La Push Pack and many other favorites from the Twilight Saga.
• Comments: A great look at Twilight, from a fresh perspective, particularly if you're a die-hard shipper of the Edward/Jacob/Bella wars who just wants some peace and quiet. (Edward/Bella is mentioned only briefly, before the story leaves it largely in the dust.)
• Halinmonk: Agreed, there is some Narm here and there but it clears up fast and if you can enjoy the TearJerkers and Crowning Moments of Heartwarming then there is a lot of awesome to go around. In my personal opinion: Made of Win. Also has its own page now, in need of Wiki Magic: The Not So Short Second Life of Bree Tanner
• Reason: Your Mileage May Vary, since the grammar certainly leaves something to be desired, but if you don't mind editing it in your head, the actual content is good.

• Synopsis: The Volturi is the only life Alec has known, Jane is the one person he ever loved and control is the definition of his being. Too bad Alec might not know himself as well as he thinks... - A teenage love story 350 years in the making.
• Comments: Companion piece to The Not So Short Second Life of Bree Tanner.

Bree Cullen, My Daughter by [1]

• Synopsis: It was almost Renesmee's first birthday when Bree leaves the Cullen house without warning. Carlisle, who managed to save Bree from the Volturi, now leads the search for her. They must find her before Alice's terrible vision comes true. (Carlisle's POV)
• Comments: Aeshna Lacrymosa's take on the “Bree-gets-adopted-by-the-Cullens” scenario explores the character of Carlisle in his fierce paternal devotion as well as the “lore” on Children of the Moon, although the story never shows Twilight’s “true” werewolves in action. Still, the plot moves through characters’ emotions and motivations, particularly Carlisle’s. The ending is heartbreaking, but with pleasant surprises at the last minute.

Moves in Mysterious Ways by Lisse

• Synopsis: "Sometimes the prey evolves, or at least learns how to issue restraining orders."
• Comments: This fic is moving, poignant and beautifully written. The ending was like being punched hard in the chest in the best way possible. It takes everything about the original book and turns it around in the most beautiful way.
  • Seconded. Very, very well written and have a very different take on the canon without changing it. Wonderful characterization, too.

• Synopsis: A one-shot retelling of Didyme's death at the hands of Aro, which S Meyer discussed but was never shown in Twilight.
• Comments: Possibly the best retelling of Didyme's story out there.

• Sypnosis: The Greatest Story Ever Told, by the Greatest Historian of the World. Aro has lived, figuratively speaking, for three thousand years. Have you ever wondered what he has seen and done?
• Comments: Written before we were introduced to more on the Volturi, such as Didyme's story, Sulpicia, etc. That said, it manages to perfectly capture Aro's voice and character, and it's just damn awesome writing.

The Golden Mean by ophelietta

• Comments: ophelietta writes a lot of good gen and Jacob/Bella fic, and I think this is one of her best. It really shows Bella growing as a character and making choices as an adult.

• Synopsis: Renesmee grows up, gets out, and finds herself.
• Comments: It's a series of sort of slice-of-life drabbley stories that really make Renesmee—or as she reinvents herself, Mary Blake—into a real, interesting, and credible character who wants to experience the world more richly.
  • Seconded by Silvertail. These metafics are very ethereal and thought-provoking. Also, it expresses many facts that people dislike about the Twilight Saga.

• Comments:

Sleepers, Awake by Feisty Y. Beden

• Recommended by philologique
• Synopsis: Bella, compulsive sketcher of wolves, has not dreamed in years. Unexpectedly, she begins to dream again the night tragedy takes away her first and greatest love. E x B, sort of.
• Comments: Storytelling at its best. An Alternate Universe Fic, the story starts with a death and doesn't necessarily get much happier from there, but the writing is beautiful and heartbreaking. If it wasn't fanfic, I'd be giving a copy to everyone I know for their birthday.

Luminosity by Alicorn

• Pairings: AU!Bella/Edward
• Synopsis: In the spirit of Harry Potter and The Methods of Rationality, a very different Bella Swan moves into Forks, and discovers there's something strange about a certain family...
• Comments: It's much more subdued than Methods of Rationality, because the world (as opposed to the characters) of the Twilight series isn't as easy to mock as the Harry Potter universe is, but it's still a nice example of "doing rationality to" a book series with, shall we say, "issues".
  • Seconded by Felicity Springs. This troper can't stand the Twilight canon without a Rifftrax and found this fic enjoyable, to the point that it's made her more sympathetic to canon than she wants to be.
  • Thirded by Red Wren, who would like to point out it has its own page now.
  • Fourthed by Yularula, this fic is really excellent, and really develops the world to a much more interesting point..
  • Very much recommended. The natural conclusion is that Luminosity/Radiance is actually the original work, and Twilight is bad fanfiction that just happened to be published first.
  • The fic is compelling but loses appeal the further you get along in the story. I personally found this version of Bella just as irritating as canon, particularly more away from interacting with the Cullens.

Friday's Child by Lisse

• Synopsis: 10 facts on Reneesmee, starting at her equivalent of sixteen and continuing onwards as she grows away from her parents and into her own person.
• Comments: Also known as The Paper Doll Kindergarten's good twin. It addresses the same topic and the same issues, but it a totally different way. The last fact is three simple statements that contain as much genuine happiness as all four Doorstoppers did, and then some.

Eternal Night by Asahel

• Synopsis: An examination of the full consequences of Bella's choice, and what Edward did to her.
• Comments: Dark with a humorous punchline.

Full Moon by Alydia Rackham

• Synopsis: Jacob said: "I was the natural path your life would have taken…If the world was the way it was supposed to be."Is that true? AU, a reimagining of Twilight, starting at the beginning. Jacob/Bella, Bella's POV
• Comments: Bella moves to Forks a semester before she does in the books and before Edward arrives so she gets a chance to get to know Jacob first. There was just so many times while reading this story that one of the things in the book that drove me crazy is completely subverted and the characters make intelligent choices. What's more, Bella? She actually cares about non-mythological creatures!
  • Lemia: Seconded. What really sold this fic for me was how it didn't bash Edward and the rest of the Cullens but put in the effort to make them well-rounded and likable characters too so it felt less like a generic "Twilight sucks and we're going to bash it all over the place" fic and more like a fully developed story in its own right that not only gives Bella a likable personality and a believable romance with Jacob but also creates just as fully formed and heartwarming relationships between them and the Cullens. Highly recommended.

Going Nowhere, Going Somewhere by Estora

• Synopsis: Post-series, the Cullens decide to attend college, and Edward is stuck with the human roommate Caden Mills, an emotional pop culture junkie. Though initially dismissive and uncomfortable with the arrangement, Edward slowly takes more of an interest in Caden, and the entire 21st century.
• Comments: Not slash, whatever that synopsis may indicate. Rather, it's an attempt to actually give Edward a personality, and though written by someone who hates the series (before this, Estora specialized in sad and disturbing one-shots about the Unfortunate Implications of the books) Edward is written as quite likable in his Defrosting Ice Queen phase. Also, Caden himself is not written as a Mary Sue on his own, which was my biggest fear going into this.

• Synopsis: A take on the phone-call between Bella and Rosalie in Breaking Dawn.
• Comments: What's said out loud here could have easily been canon, but it's Rosalie's thoughts, narration, and internal snark that make this one-shot what it is.

Four Square, by Joyful

• Synopsis: Buffy and Dawn move to Forks and become a part of an entirely new supernatural world.
• Comments: A very long (72 chapters and counting) work-in-progress that's a crossover with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It's incredibly well-written and fun to read.

Twilight the Rewrite, by Tprinces

• Synopsis: A rewrite of Twilight, fixing some sequencing, logic and writing issues.
• Comments: An excellent rewrite for people who didn't like the original book. Very well-written and actually quite tense and exciting at parts, and the more glaring Plot Holes, pacing issues and Mary Sue tendencies are fixed. The author's also done a re-written version of New Moon and is working on a new version of Eclipse.
  • I read the first 15 chapters or so... I must say that while it is a good vampire story... I feel that it isn't a proper re-write, change the characters' names and you wouldn't even outright connect with Twilight and IMHO it makes it is a poor rewrite, even if it is a good story.

More Than One by BabelFish42

• Synopsis: For Alice, some things in life are straightforward. Like not wearing white after Labor Day. But not all questions have simple answers. Why was she really avoiding Bella during her pregnancy? And how exactly do you define a family?
• Comments: A lovely little two-shot dealing with Alice's relationships with Bella, Rosalie, and Esme during the second third of Breaking Dawn. Painful but luminous, and adds in little character details which fit perfectly into canon.

Freedom Triumphs by habeshaforever

• Synopsis: Leah confronts Emily on the flaws of Imprinting. Emily POV. Oneshot.
• A story for the Leah-lovers, the Imprinting-haters, and all the feminists who felt offended by Twilight. Leah's criticisms of Emily sound like any that could have been leveled at Bella. It also looks at how Imprinting might affect the Imprint-ee. Specifically in how almost every retort of Emily's is the same thing: "Sam loves me.

The Most Popular Book in the Whole World (and sequels) by Jessica Wagstrom

• Synopsis: A parody of the entire Twilight series. We follow the adventures of Friggin' Gorgeous, called Frig, and her space alien boyfriend Xlormp. It really must be read to be believed.
• Comments: Probably not a story for diehard fans, The Most Popular Book in the Whole World is extremely funny, mocking the writing style of the original books while keeping its own distinct flavor. Even though the other books in the series (the Most Second Book in the Whole Series, Only Slightly Better Than the Last Book, and the Most Incredible Work of Literature in the Entire Cosmos) fall prey to some slight Cerebus Syndrome, they remain funny, the plots remain...unusual and the characters remain likable. Though a good read, it's pretty long.

The Wise Man and the Fool by dasmervin

• Synopsis: Set just after the end of Breaking Dawn, the Volturi return to Italy and plan their revenge.
• Comments: Just absolutely amazing. Aro is in full Magnificent Bastard mode and it's all perfectly canon. Definitely worth a read.

The Wedding Crashers by dasmervin

• Synopsis: After four years on her own, Leah thought she'd escaped her dismal old life at La Push. But when she's called home to attend Jacob and Renesmee's wedding, she brings a little company, and the stage is set for her old and new lives to collide.
• Comments: A crossover with Supernatural that takes place ten years after Breaking Dawn, with Leah Clearwater, Sam and Dean Winchester, and Castiel as the protagonists. This is a totally awesome, kickass fic that brings up everything that is wrong with the Twilight universe (without having to exaggerate or distort anything) - and then introduces a good dosage of reality to it - SPN style of course.

Seducing Ms. Swan by DQRC

• Synopsis: Post-New Moon AU. Bella never jumped, Alice never had her vision and Edward never came back. Six years later, Bella is struggling to make a new life for herself as a teacher in Rochester, New York. How will she fare when a very familiar student crops up in her classroom? Will she be able to remain professional, or will old ties get in the way? Can Ms Swan be seduced?
• Comments: Unfortunately, the style resembles that of S. Meyer to a painful degree of topaz and unwarranted angst and the main character cannot manage to think or reason in a convincing manner. She avoids drawing the obvious conclusions simply to further the plot. That, coupled with the author's inability to keep track of which day of the week it is in one paragraph makes for a very frustrating, unsatisfying read.
  • Then why is it being recommended?

Harmony

• Synopsis: A non-canonical take on Bella's transformation. One-shot, written pre-Breaking Dawn.
• Comments: A beautifully written one-shot where Bella (* gasp* ) is actually her own person. And music/piano is a central point, so that's always good, too.

Wide Awake by Angst Goddess 003

• Synopsis: Bella and Edward meet when she moves to Forks, and they find that they have one very interesting thing in common - neither can sleep without nightmares.
• Comments: AH/AU, OOC, and very much rated R for language and sex (although this is a rare and really good example of sex not driving the story). Borders on darkfic, as both Bella and Edward have serious psychological problems due to their pasts. Features incredibly well-developed characters who react realistically to their individual situations; even though it goes dark at times, it never loses a sense of hope that the protagonists can be stronger by banding together.

Mr Horrible

• Synopsis: They meet at a gallery, from two different worlds. Watch as they learn... oh, who am I kidding here? They meet. They are opposites. They attract. Rated M for serious potty mouth and scenes of the citrus variety. 'The Gigli of Fanficion.Net'
• Comments: AH/AU, sort of OOC. A fanfic that manages to be completely crazy and a sharp commentary of its canon origins at the same time. Finished at 34 chapters. Hilarious, of the borderline Crack Fic variety. The personal preference of this reviewer is biased immensely in the direction of the fic being better than Canon.

Forever

• Pairing: Alice/Bella Bella/Rosalie
• Synopsis: "Bella falls in love with Alice instead of Edward from the get go."
• Comments: Somewhere there's a parallel universe where this story became a pop culture juggernaut and the Utah lady's work is only a fanfic of it. The constant Take That Scrappy moments with Edward alone....
  • DOTMW: Can you say Better Than Canon? Seconded from someone who disliked the source material immensely. Bella is immediately more likable and she shares much better chemistry with Alice than Edward (though that may be more of a testament to the author's skill). If you thought the romance in Twilight was plodding and boring, this is a huge improvement
  • xdyj: Thirded. IMO its author Jocelyn Torrent, though no longer active, is probably the best Alice/Bella, Rosalie/Bella fic author ever.

Twilight by Hans Von Hozel

• Comments: Basically, Bella and Edward get bridge-dropped in a way that comes off as some of the most epic Narm ever.

The Red Line by Winnd Singer

• Synopsis: AH/AU. Edward is a exotic dancer, and Bella is a grad student in psychology, looking for an interesting case study.
• Comments: Weird idea? Sure. But it works incredibly well, and Winnd Singer is deft at developing her characters as well as pulling on heartstrings.

La Foudre by Kyilliki (Warnings for Gore and for some mild sexual content, for now)

• Synopsis: During their confrontation with the Volturi in New Moon, Bella was forced to stay with the Volturi in exchange for the Cullen's safety. While her stay with the Volturi, she falls into one of Aro's games.
• Comments: A well written take on an Aro/Bella story that doesn't portray the characters differently. Wonderful characterization and a very creative writing style. Also she adds a nice feeling to the story which flows smoothly. The plotline isn't repetitive--unlike the most recent Aro/Bella stories--since the author stated that Bella would not have a happy ending

Madness by Lonni

• Synopsis: AU. Jacob was attracted by Bella because she was destined to give birth to his twin soul. But what if Jacob himself was the father of Bella's daughter?
• Comments: This is a new fic that just came out and I honestly don't know where is going or even if the fic will be worth reading. All I know is that the first chapter blew my mind and made me think a lot; for this reason alone the fic deserves to be read. Also, the writing is quite good and both Jacob and Bella are well characterized.

This 20th Century of Angst, Neurosis, and Panic by Britta/oxymoronassoc

• Synopsis: A spoiled socialite and a brooding immortal find solace in accidental acquaintance
• Comments: From one of the masterminds behind Growing Up Cullen comes this unlikely, yet surprisingly well-executed crossover, Characterization is brilliant, and the interplay between two very different characters is well worth a look.

The Meadow Scene Redone by Aradia Lestat-Ming Ue

• Pairings: Edward/Bella
• Synopsis: The meadow scene from Twilight redone in a sort of twisted way.
• Comments: A brilliant piece that would top the original one. Twilight lacks true love but the author excellently showed that true love exists not outside the person's face but the person he or she is inside.

A Very Underestimated Emotion by Rockstorm

• Pairings: Jacob/Edward
• Synopsis: Basically a rewrite of Eclipse that fills in the the plot holes by creating a relationship between Jacob and Edward.
• Comments: This story is incredible. The author truly talented, and that's not something I say lightly. I despise Twilight on many different levels, but this story makes it bearable, and I swear to God that Rockstorm writes the characters better than Meyer could ever hope of doing; making them more believable, relatable, and realistic. It goes for gritty realism rather than an idealized love story, and pulls it off perfectly.

Sometimes, We Kick Ass by Tuna Salad Sonnet

• Pairings: Emmett/Angela
• Synopsis: A series of drabbles for an unusual pairing.
• Comments: Takes place in an alternate universe in which Angela is a witch. It's an odd pairing, to be sure, but the author makes it work wonderfully. Warm fuzzies galore.

Un Fantasma Tra Noi by Dear Testament

• Pairing: Jasper/Bella
• Synopsis: Jasper seeks Bella out after detecting her scent at school. He loses control, and now he finds himself falling in love with a girl he may have already killed. Lemons, violence, slight AU, Darksper, and Ghost!Bella.
• Comments: A very original but very dark fic, Bella as a ghost is fun to read and aspects of her that were informed traits in the book are actually demonstrated in her PO Vs. The characterization and development starts out fine, but really becomes great as the fic progresses. There's so much suspense in not knowing whether Bella survives or not, among other things. It's in-progress.
  • Seconding this rec. I really like this story, pretty intense. Myself and a few other reviewers were shocked with how far the author went but it's a good thing and it is really getting exciting, in my opinion.

• Synposis: Edward is a sugar addicted seventeen-year old who thinks he is a vampire. He is in love with Charlie Swan, who drives in the town's supply of sugar every week. But when Bella arrives, she decides to destroy their relationship and take Edward for her own.

• Comments: Absolutely sodding hilarious. It's a Crazy Awesome parody (affectionate). There aren't any vampires, the Cullens all live in a mental asylum and everybody else besides Bella is a horrible mutant (thus the reason everybody is automatically attracted to her). Good for both Twilight fans and Twilight bashers. All the characters are completely OOC but nobody's complaining. It's just too funny.

• Comments: Similar to Seducing Ms. Swann in taking a single pivot point from canon and running with an AU. Tender without being saccharine, and works in similar thematic issues critiquing the issues with Edward and Bella's canon relationship without destroying it.

• Synopsis: A new take on the Imprinting fics. Embry imprints on Jacob’s cousin. And if the reviews are true, her reaction is rare: the girl, to put it simply, flips her shit and refuses him.
• Pairing(s): Embry/OC, all other canon, promises of Charlie/OC later and Leah.
• Comments: The OC is a bit of a jerkass to Embry at first. The canon characters are mostly IC, though the author (who seems to hate the vampires with 2 exceptions) has an interesting view on Nessie. The OC could be any 16-22 year old who finds out they’re involved in a supernatural world. The reviewers like her. And the author has decent snark skills for someone whose about 16. There are some holes in the story but is a first attempt and decently done at that.
  • It's an interesting idea to react badly to the thought of being forced to be with this guy you just met (or re-met in her case) but the writing gets near-hysterical at times and it really seems like she's just going to end up with him anyway so it's more of a 'playing hard to get' kind of story than a 'I will not let myself be fated to be with someone' kind of story which is what I thought it would be from the description.

• Comments: This is a terrifying but very well-written look at imprinting. Take note of the warnings for rape and violence.
