If you look at some of the interviews they've given, you can see the foreshadowing of their eating disorder. In one interview with Pop Star magazine, she admits that sometimes she won't eat, say, a sandwich and they often feel insecure wearing bikinis.
...which means there's no excuse for the same sorts of comments coming from the same people who criticized her in '08 for they appearance at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. As they themselves tweeted, "I've gained weight. Get over it."

Post-fame, she had a falling out with Selena Gomez, the longtime best friend who Demi home-schooled with (they've since reconciled), and their mother ignores her clear mental and health issues and they had to go on tour with their ex-boyfriend while he brought along his new girlfriend to the shows. No wonder many of their fans want to give her an "It'll all be okay" hug.
