Darker and Edgier: Compared to the sequels, the first film is darker; it features a character getting hurt, being killed and has intense scenes.
Getting Crap Past the Radar: Dot whispering in the kangaroo's ear which she responds "Anywhere you like, dear." It might mean Dot needs to go poop or urinate.
Nightmare Fuel: The bunyip song, the aborigine hunters and Dot lost in the forest.
Tear Jerker: The opening, Dot sitting on the ground behind a tree and the ending.
The Woobie:
- Dot losing her way home, when she cries for the kangaroo being injured after she jumped through the cliff and when she cries for the kangaroo being separated from each other and never seeing each other again.
- During the Council of the Animals scene, the kangaroo says to the animals that Dot lost her way home but the animals are angry with humans so the kangaroo gives an example to them and it was how she lost her joey. After hearing the story, the animals now understand that they learned the true meaning of getting lost as they felt sorry for the kangaroo and agree to help Dot find her way home but they don't know where her home is.
  - The kangaroo herself when she gets injured after climbing off the cliff.
- When Dot's father and granduncle are back at the house, they say to Dot's father's wife that they can't find Dot anywhere so her parents cry over Dot.

Anvilicious: The anti-racism moral of Dot in Space.
Ho Yay: The round and square princes in Dot in Space. Especially with the whole Romeo and Juliet thing they have going on, as well as how effeminate the round prince is.
Lighter and Softer: Compared to the first film, the sequels have slapstick, comic relief and funny moments
Nightmare Retardant: The Bunyip turns out to be not nearly as scary as the first film made it out to be.
