genre /ʒ'ɒnrə/ —A genre is a particular type of literature, painting, music, film, or other art form which people consider as a class because it has special characteristics. (Though, of course, genres are not necessarily mutually exclusive, and many series do straddle multiple genres). The items on this list attempt to define these characteristics.

In our terms, a genre is a work that shares a set of tropes in common with other members of the same class. They don't all have to use the exact same tropes the exact same way, but they share the same set of conventions. See Genre Tropes for a list of these conventions.

A subgenre is a more specific form of a genre that typically inherits most, if not all, the tropes used in the "parent" genre but adds its own set of tropes, character archetypes, and plots. For example, the Romantic Comedy inherits tropes from both Romance and Comedy and puts them in a blender. Any subgenres we have will be listed in the categories under the appropriate genre.
