• Base Breaker: Auto has a fairly vocal hatedom, especially on TV Tropes where he's considered to be The Scrappy. However, just as many fans like him, or at least feel that he's an inoffensive and harmless addition to the series. Whether you'll like him or not depends on how funny you think his antics are, and if you don't mind how much he stands out from Dr. Light's other robots.
• Broken Base: Probably moreso than any other game in the main "Classic" series for a while. About half of fans regard it as a worthwhile effort which attempted to address the Capcom Sequel Stagnation of the previous two entries, while the other half regard it as being the game which sent the Classic series down in flames until Mega Man 9 came along. Opinions have cooled down as years have passed, though the debate still lives on in some circles of the fandom.
  • Mega Man actually threatens to kill Wily in the ending, and comes this close to following through with it. Is it an awesome moment showing that even someone as nice as Mega Man has his limits, or is it grossly out of character?
• Ensemble Darkhorse: Bass. In the grand scheme of things he isn't that important of a character despite being Wily's right hand guy. And yet he wormed his way into plenty of fans' hearts thanks to his cool design, Big Badass Wolf companion, and fun boss fights. This has not only led to him becoming playable in several spinoff games, but getting top billing with Mega Man in the Mega Man and Bass duology!
• Epileptic Trees: In Mega Man X, one of Dr. Light's capsules is guarded by a robot who looks suspiciously similar to Auto, mainly due to being a bulky green and yellow robot who's affiliated with the good doctor. This has led to quite a bit of speculation that it is Auto himself, or a robot built using his design as a baseline. While Mega Man X was released first and thus preventing it from being a Call Back, Auto could be a Call Forward to this particular robot.
• Fandom Berserk Button: This game's fans do not take kindly to the jabs and insults lobbed at it during the hatedom's heyday. And even now, there's lingering resentment over the perception that Mega Man 9 saved the series from the supposed rut this game is blamed for putting it in.
• Fandom Rivalry: Again, fans of this game tend to bicker with hardcore fans of 9 thanks to the debate over which game saved the series from Capcom Sequel Stagnation.
• Good Bad Bugs: Many involve the Noise Crush. You can fire it then immediately slide into it, empowering the next blast. Normally you're supposed to bounce it off a wall first and catch the ricochet.
  • Turbo Man can be one shotted with the Noise Crush thanks to the door's position and scrolling properties. Fire it right in front of the door and slide through - it will move through the now open door and bounce off the walls at TM's head height. Turbo Man will die before he finishes his intro animation!
• It Was His Sled: Not as bad as some examples thanks to his more heroic outings coloring his perception, but a lot of outsiders are aware that Bass is actually a Wily bot.
• Most Annoying Sound: The song that plays in Auto's shop. Good god.
• Scrappy Weapon: The Wild Coil isn't clearly labelled as an Anti-Air weapon , so no one understood why Mega Man would fire two springs everywhere. What kind of lame power is Springs, anyway? The power to kill vampires and Wily Capsules, apparently.
  • The Slash Claw suffers from massive Hitbox Dissonance, forcing you to reposition yourself differently against every enemy.
  • The Scorch Wheel is outclassed by Noise Crush in almost all aspects. If you're following weakness order, you won't even have a boss to use it against (every boss weak to the Scorch Wheel is also weak to the Freeze Cracker or Junk Shield - which are better weapons than the Wheel overall).
• That One Boss: Dr. Wily finally decided Authority Equals Asskicking and outfitted his Capsule with hard to dodge, insanely damaging attacks. You WILL use your E-tanks there, guaranteed.
• Vindicated by History: Thanks to opinions cooling down overtime, more fans have been willing to look at this game objectively and give it a shot. While it's still somewhat controversial, the stigma over it outright sucking dinosaur balls has all but vanished.
