Miku Miku Dance

Miku Miku Dance (known amongst the community as MMD) is a freeware program that lets users create 3D animated movies, originally produced for music videos of Vocaloid Hatsune Miku. The program itself was programmed by Yu Higuchi (Higuchi M) and has gone through significant upgrades since its creation. Its production was made as part of the VOCALOID Promotion Video Project (VPVP).

Many notable Vocaloid music videos have been made with MMD.

The software comes with a pack of 3D models of the original Japanese Vocaloids (Miku, Kaito, Len, Rin, and Meiko). Additional models can be downloaded for use, however, the copyright rules depend on the modeler himself/herself. Other programs have been made to work with MMD, like PMD editor, and Miku Miku Effect.

The program, and videos made using the program, provide examples of these tropes:
  • Ascended Extra: The characters Yowane Haku and Akita Neru, who were not originally Vocaloids, have been licensed for the Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA games.
  • Author Appeal: Many MMD users use PMD editor to make self-models or other characters, usually one they make up or from their favorite series.
  • Bishonen: The male versions of Idolmaster characters. New male characters in MMD are very rare.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: The name of the program.
  • Mega Crossover: This is very common, as models of characters from various series and video games having been made.
  • Panty Shot: The skirt-wearing models don't wear Modesty Shorts, and the software allows for compromising camera angles. Because Sex Sells (or at least nets you easy subscribers on any video-sharing site), this trope is predictably present in large quantities.
  • Troll: Some modelers have strict distribution rules, like no editing or redistribution, but some people don't listen and do it anyway. Modelers have retaliated to this by blocking out download links to certain countries or just taking down the models altogether.
  • Zettai Ryouki: Many of the miniskirted models.
