Phelous/YMMV

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • In his review of Anaconda, Phelous theorizes that the reason the anaconda is attacking isn't because it's hungry, but because Jon Voight has been strangling people with his legs and framing the snake and because Jennifer Lopez and Ice Cube(s) were the heroes.
    • Benzaie and Phelous both believe the Professor in Humains drags his son along on the expedition because he hates him and just hopes he'll die at some point.
  • Non Sequitur Scene: He refers to the rabbit-costumed doctor in Cabin Fever as as a "Big Crocodile Scene Happening".
    • Phelous killing the hooker in his basement and burping afterwards in the Mortal Komedy review.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: The end of his Pulse 3 review. After reviewing 5 films that have the name "Pulse" he manages to resurrect a dead Angry Joe...Only for Joe to laugh manically as he shoots Phelous over and over and over again.
  • He Panned It, Now He Sucks: He's gotten quite a bit of backlash for giving a negative review of Turtles Forever stating that it glorified the 2003 incarnation of the turtles and dumbed-down the 1980s incarnation of the turtles.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In the end credits of one of his early reviews, he added a note at the end stating that he was going for The Nostalgia Critic's record for dying in his reviews. Probably safe to say that he's succeeded by now.
    • It's been taken Up to Eleven lately, with him dying in other people's reviews.
      • The gag has apparently been retired, as he doesn't die nearly as much after adopting the Doctor Who intro. To Phelous's chagrin after reviewing the 30th Anniversary edition of Night of the Living Dead (which featured a new score and new scenes badly spliced into it).

Phelous(crying): I remember when I used to die. Those were good times.

  • Hype Backlash: Phelous reviews The Human Centipede in his bathroom - not because he finds the movie disgusting, but because he finds it a piece of shit, largely due to people making it a big deal.
  • Idiot Plot: A lot of the movies he reviews have one. Special mention goes to Incubus, which he describes as the "Anti-Logic Movie", and later on refers to extreme stupidity displayed in other movies as "Incubus logic".
  • Love It or Hate It: His Turtles Forever review is quickly becoming his most divisive review.
  • Memetic Mutation: The "rape horn" from Troll 3 ("Quest for the Mighty Sword").
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Responses to his early videos ranged from "Shows promise" to "Painfully bad" since then he's become one of the most consistently entertaining producers on the site, and certainly tied with Spoony for most visually inventive reviews. Additionally, his role in Kickassia helped win over some new fans.
  • Special Effects Phailure: Phelous's own effects are actually pretty good for a lone guy doing them on his own. He'll often mock those of the movie, though.
    • An entirely needless special effects failure occurred throughout much of Pulse 2, where actors were green-screened into scenes that they didn't even need to be, such as in front of houses and such. Phelous mocks this by screening himself in front of his own normal background (it's actually good enough that you might not have noticed unless he pointed it out, complete with his image doing a 180).
  • The Woobie: Phelous. His slow, pained death at the end of his Stay Alive review, complete with Blood From the Mouth, and his subsequent homage to the Fifth and Fourth Doctor's regenerations, and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories in his House of the Dead review really cemented this.
