Again, one of my tropes, but ... nine examples, good description, good collection of categories. Any objections?
Talk:Epiphany (trope)
I don't have any objections, it looks good
Shoot it and launch!
You really shouldn't launch your own trope candidates, you know.
I'll do it for you.
EDIT: And done.
Thank you!
And as a bonus, I entry-pimped it on a few pages.
What dramatic character development happened for Spongebob when he realized where the pickles were?
...he realized that he'd staked too much of his identity on his prodigious skill as a fry cook and thus resolved to become more of a complete human being rather than just the face of a fast food franchise?
For the record, I'm very clearly bullshitting - I agree that this example doesn't really fit here in any way.
That SB realized that the fish, who keeps on complaining was actually hiding the pickles. (SB knows that he didn't miss any ingredient whatsoever). I thought that his "Bam, I got it" was the epiphany.
Okay, I'll leave it to you guys then. I thought it might count, but thanks. I'll come back when something clicks, hopefully whatever example I manage to find might be a better fit.
While in a general sense an epiphany can be "just" a sudden realization, the definition for the purpose of the trope is a dramatic revelation that changes the character in some way.
Before we delete anything, though, I guess the question is, should the trope definition be expanded to include epiphanies that do not result in character development?
Okay, so that way I (and others) can have a clear idea before I dive bomb on it. :D
...is anyone actually pursuing this redefinition?
I'm thinking a change to title along the lines of Enlightening Epiphany could possibly work, pending the outcome of other parts of this discussion. Also, it stands to reason that not every single one has to result in character development per se (this is a supertrope, after all), so at minimum I wouldn't outright object to that kind of redefinition. Even so, we want to be able to draw some kinda of line with regards to significance so we don't end up cataloging every single minor instance ever.
I just wish I had more examples handy to populate it with. But I wanted to get it in the workshop before I got caught up in preparing for my upcoming vacation.
Have a good trip, Looney.
What's funny was that I found "Epiphany", but it's not the one we're looking for. But this work was deleted, since they say it's unneeded? Link: https://web.archive.org/web/20111210135706/https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Epiphany
Poking around for 30 seconds shows that the work was moved to the proper section at Webcomic/Epiphany on TVT.
