Tv Tropes/Heartwarming and Other Pages

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

Hey, I got a question about the TV Tropes/Heartwarming page and other similar pages. What do we do about those red unlink words about the Tropers from the Other Wiki? Do we link to a new page that says that "Certain Tropers are not found here, it's because they trope in Tv Tropes and they haven't join All The Tropes?"

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

We've generally ignored the troper links, or turned them into plain text.

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

Do I put the tropers' names or just leave them to say "This Troper" or "A Troper"? Though putting their names will might be a tiny bit confusing.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Leave the tropers' names, just unlink them and remove the "Tropers/" namespacing, if you feel you have to do anything about them at all. By which I mean, if you come across something like

Tropers/RandomPerson

or

RandomPerson

just turn it into

RandomPerson

if you really feel like you must do something about it.

As for possible confusion, well, most of the time if not almost all of the time, the tropers' names will be in contexts that will make it clear they are tropers' names., If there's anyone on the wiki who'll be confused because he doesn't know we forked from TVT and thus have references like that around, well, we want to know so we can celebrate him, and having him ask about it will point him out to us. <grin>

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

Got it, I was just thinking of those new readers who don't know about the fork and stuff, when I said it'll cause some form of confusion, like assuming the Other Wiki Tropers also do double time here.

Please don't use abbreviations in works names, unless the abbreviation was in the name to begin with.

I wasn't aware that there was a Pokémon Trope Classification Guide, so I was surprised to see you had moved a page to "Pokémon TCG Online". Turns out that there isn't a Pokémon Trope Classification Guide after all.

I've moved that page to Pokémon Trading Card Game Online for you, to match the name that's in the logo that's on the page.

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

Sorry, I wasn't aware that I was causing confusion and thanks for fixing my mistakes (Plus, I'm not use to making redirects here). Also, do we need a Poke Trope Classification Guide for other Pokemon related things?

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

I think we can get away without a trope classification guide - we have categories, and they do the same thing automatically.

Uploading images

13
Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Jade, please when uploading an image select a license. We are in the process of cleaning up all the images without licenses that we inherited from TV Tropes, and adding more without without license information makes our job harder and puts the wiki at legal risk.

If you have no idea what license to use, select "Fair Use".

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

So how do I select the "Fair Use" button, especially after I upload it?

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Underneath the summary box and all the "boilerplate buttons" in the file description box there is a dropdown labeled "Licensing". Click that, and choose the "Fair Use" option. Or, you know, one of the others if you happen to know the licensing is different or you created the image yourself.

If you need to add it to an image you've already uploaded, just edit the image page and add fairuse to the description.

There should be no need for you to delete an image; and in fact, I'm not sure that anyone other than admins have the rights to do so.

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

I tried to get rid of the image and fix my mistake. Which one has fair use?

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

I don't understand your message. What image did you try to get rid of, and which one what has fair use?

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)
Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

On that page, click the link reading "Upload a new version of this file" underneath the "File History" table.

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

How come the licensing bar doesn't show up when I go to "Upload new image." I'm trying to backtrack a bit and do a bit of cleaning.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

If you mean "Upload new version", that's because it's only present on the new upload screen and you have to add the license template manually. Check the "diff" display for one of the files I changed earlier today to see what I did. But I already updated all the files you uploaded since you started doing so last June, so there's nothing you should need to change. Unless, of course, you uploaded more while I was working.

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

I haven't uploaded any new files while you were working and thanks.

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

Okay, sorry. I won't speed along at full blast like I was doing earlier.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Oh, no need to slow down. Just make sure all the info gets added.

Speaking of which, one other thing you should do, that I didn't notice you weren't doing -- add a category for any work, trope, creator, etc. page it appears on -- they'll be listed at the very bottom of the image page, as well as the source work if there is one. For instance, your image of the cast of Ouran High School Host Club appears on Border in Bloom, so it gets categories for Border in Bloom and Ouran High School Host Club. (Don't add a category for templates, userpages, or things like that. And if the category you think it should be comes up a redlink, that means we need to go clean up some categories somewhere; you can skip it in that case.)

I should reassure you -- these are guidelines that have only evolved in the last few weeks and months, and they're not yet written down anywhere so you haven't actually done anything wrong yet. I just wanted to catch you before you dumped a whole lot more files into the wiki that we'd need to fix later.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Also... there was no need to post three almost identical messages in three different places to ask me these questions. I'll be alerted just fine when you add a note to this thread; more messages doesn't make it happen faster. Consider yourself lucky that I'm skiving off a bit by actually doing stuff on the wiki right now; under proper conditions you'd've had to wait until I got home tonight before getting a reply.

I had to delete one image you uploaded

2
Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

File:Polyphemus.jpg was a copyrighted image with no free use or licensing anywhere I could locate it on the web. You'll have to find an alternative cyclops image that can be used without paying a fee.

Good rule of thumb for the future: If you can't find a version that doesn't have a watermark stamped across its middle, it probably isn't free for us to use.

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

I didn't know, I was looking for images that are safe to use and I made a mistake (Thinking it was one of the safe images). Nice save.

Jade, I'm flattered, but...

2
Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

...it's not necessary to thank me for everything I've ever posted in a discussion thread.

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

Okay, I'll slow down with my attempts to "Thanking everyone."

Fixing the Broken Links

1
Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

Hey, I was trying to clean up the category of broken links. So, what do I do what I seek are the real sources, but they're are missing, i.e. an author deleted his/her Tumblr page, Tweet, or I can't find the image/appropriate link.

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)
GethN7 (talkcontribs)

If you can dig up a pre-July 2012 version of the TV Tropes page off the Wayback Machine, convert it for use here, and add a note in the edit reasons where you got it from, you can go right ahead.

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

Okay, I found it. I was reading the forums and they said some weird thing that they have no interest in doing any real life "Crowning Moments of Awesome," now I'm thinking that the other historical events' "CMoA" or "Crownings" have been purge as well.

https://web.archive.org/web/20111002160450/http://tvtropes.org:80/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Awesome/WorldWarII (It goes up to Oct. 2. 2011. Anything after that is entirely blank. Unless, there's something wrong with my computer).

So, another question. How do I dig up something that's archive in Wayback Machine? I don't know the ins and outs of it. Unlike archive. is. Also, how do I convert it, for our use here?

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

To make it easier on you, start with this:

https://web.archive.org/web/20101018003641/http://tvtropes.org:80/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Awesome/WorldWarII?action=source

This is the source of the page, so all you'd need to do is copy it to Notepad (or whatever word processor, or even here in edit view), convert the markup to MediaWiki format, then it's good to go.

You can also get in touch with Labster, he might be able to convert it for you and upload a copy you can work on if you don;t want to do it all by hand, he has a Perl script to automate the process somewhat.

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

So, when I'm done with the trope pages that I'm currently doing. I got a question, what about the tropes that appears recently in the other trope wiki? I'm beginning to think that they will restore the "Historian's Fallacy" when I checked their list (I was lurking in the forums talking about "lost" tropes), link: https://web.archive.org/web/20170723230601/http://tvtropes.org:80/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LogicalFallacies?from=Main.YouFailLogicForever

And speaking of lost tropes, how does one restore a trope page that has been purge? When there's little to no evidence of its existence.

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

Hey, I found these. I know that it's more for the "Censored/Lost" wiki talk forum, but I don't know where to place what I found (I'm gonna see what I can find. Links:

Creating New Tropes

2
Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Jade, I know we've brought this up before -- when you create a new trope, you should do so in the Trope Workshop. I'm referring this time to True Art Is Realistic, which you created this afternoon.

Setting aside the fact that I just linked to it right there, there's a link to the Trope Workshop on every page, in the "Troping Utilities" section of the menu running along the left edge. This is at least the second time that we've informed you of this. I'm giving you an official admin warning now -- if you ignore this advice in the future, we'll take away your edit privileges for a while.

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

Thanks. I was about to cry for help about it, because I know I'm repeating some of my earlier mistakes, okay, sorry about that (sometimes I highlighted red words and go "time to make a new page."). So, I just enter those tropes that I see in the "restore list" in the workshop page.

So How's This Page Coming Along?

24
Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)
GethN7 (talkcontribs)

Not bad at all. You've gotten the basic idea how to make pages here, just needs some minor cleanup and some stuff added to flesh it out some more. A page image also wouldn't hurt.

Recommend the same for the Psylocke page too.

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

So, do were is the 'Butterfly of Transformation' trope? I'm trying to clean up/tweak the Psylocke page.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)
Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

No, I checked Tv Tropes and those are two different tropes. I was asking if the 'BoT' is under a different name (like the trope, 'Boobs and Butt Pose' is called 'Over the Shoulder Pose' here.) Guess, I didn't word it right.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

We do not appear to have that trope documented. Looking at its history over at ATT, "Butterfly of Transformation" appears to have been proposed and launched just a few days after the scrape which created our fork was completed. If you would care to create your own version -- this is important, it must not be a word-for-word copy of the TVT original -- and put it in the trope workshop, I see no reason why it wouldn't get launched quickly.

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

So, I'll just make a page and how do I give a shout to the trope workshop? I mean place it there to be iron out?

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)
Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Well, it's a good start, but a) it should have been started in the Trope Workshop (which involves just a bit more than putting the workshop template on the page) and b) It kinda reads like a Google Translate version of the TVT page.

I fixed the first by moving the page into the Workshop.

The second... well, yes, it literally meets the requirement of not being a word-for-word copy of the TVT page, but frankly, it's obviously the TVT page with each individual sentence rewritten -- including a "compare to" link to a page we don't have (which I deleted). It doesn't come off so much as an original treatment of the same idea as a mechanical translation. I've grabbed a copy of it to a local file, I'll work on it if I have a free moment during the day and see what I come up with.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

And I've put my revised version of the article text up on the page.

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

Like I said, I have a basic idea. Plus, that moth trope is another one we don't have, unless it's here under a different name (I figure we'll deal with that later).

So, the next time when there's a trope that we don't have, how do I toss it into the workshop? Besides, slapping the workshop banner and placing it into the workshop category.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

In the menu to the left, under "Troping Utilities", there is a "Trope Workshop" option. Click that link, which will take you to the Workshop. In the middle of the top of the page is an input box marked "Enter new trope name here" with a faded button below. Put the new trope name in that box, and click the button. This will create a new page with all the proper markup, located in the right namespace, and do everything else necessary to initialize a new trope in the workshop; all you'll need to do is put in the description and the examples.

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

Is there any Trope that uses the "Butterfly that symbolizes change/changes?"

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Actually, I've just thrown a page image on Psylocke, and I've been doing the occasional clean-up pass as Jade adds more material. I know Jade's paid attention, as (s)he's taken the lead from some of my changes.

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

So, where do I find good images for Captain Britain and the Butterfly of Transformation page? I still need to find examples of the trope in action for the BoT as well, so how do I go about that.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Google Images is always a good place start. Just search on those names and see what comes up.

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)
Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

If you can't just say "sure, I'll use that", post on the Page Images forum (which I know you've used) and ask people there.

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

So, when I find a good image. How do I paste it there in the page? I ran into a similar problem earlier on something different.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

I was going to point you at our help page on that task, but I just realized we don't seem to have one. I'll have to rectify that ASAP.

It's a simple process. Over in the menu along the left edge of every page, there is a link reading "Upload file". (It's actually there twice, once at the top, the sixth item, and once more down under the "tools" submenu.) Click it and it will take you to a page where you can pick the file you want to upload on your computer, add a description, pick a license type, and add categories. When uploading an image, please please please provide as much info as you can about the source in the description field, including the original URL and any copyright/ownership information. Here's a good example.

If you got the image off another site, the license will be either "Fair Use", or the license used by that site. In particular, wikis often use Creative Commons licenses, and the license information is usually linked on the bottom of their pages, so you can just go look and see what they use. If you got the image off Wikipedia or from the Wikimedia Commons (like this one), there's a special license selection for that. And if you created the image, there's a special license for allowing your own work on the wiki -- here's an example of that. (What constitutes "created by you" is actually surprisingly broad, as the image at that link might suggest.)

Don't worry about the section that lists what pages link to the image, that's generated automatically by the wiki.

Okay, once you've picked your file and filled in all the blanks, hit the "upload file" button at the very bottom of the page. In a few seconds your file will up on the wiki. The top of the page will have a banner that reads "File:Name of Your Uploaded File.jpg". Highlight that and copy it.

Then go to the page where you want that image to appear and edit it. Insert a blank line where you want the image to go -- for basically any page, the first image is always at the top, and goes on the second line, under the page type markup. Type two left square brackets, and then past in the filename you just copied from the page you came from. The line will look like

[[File:Name of Your Uploaded File.jpg

If your image is small enough -- no larger than 300 or 400 pixels horizontally -- you can then finish the markup like this:

That's a vertical bar, the word "frame" and two right square brackets. "frame" puts a border around the image and positions it flush against the right edge of the page, which is where we want page images to be.

If it's bigger than 400 pixels horizontally, you're going to want to shrink it. There are a couple ways of doing this; I generally use this markup unless there's a reason not to:

Vertical bar, the word "thumb", another vertical bar, "350px", and two right square brackets. This means "put a thumbnail image 350 pixels wide inside a frame and make it flush against the right edge of the page".

Then save the page -- after noting in the edit reason that you've added a page image -- and you're done.

Does that help?

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)
Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

I was just looking at it last night and thinking it's good to launch.

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

I found that the userbox for wikicyclopes was messed up. I'm trying to fix it, how come the picture isn't showing up? All it says is "35px" (I find it a bit weird that I tried to post up images, but they don't show).Okay, I' think I got the idea on how to do it, since I manage to fix the userbox, though I'm worried that they might not show up later.

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

Including a Trope?

11
Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

So, how do I include a Trope in the Captain Britain (or any) page? I'm a bit worried about copyright, like my little accident earlier.

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

If we don't have something that TV Tropes does, you can make your own version of it here, you just can't copy their version.

You can have a trope with the same name as their version, even the same basic idea, you just can't copy their trope page verbatim and have to write and fill it with your own work and examples.

You can use the Trope Workshop for that. See the Troping Utilities sidebar to get to that.

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

So, I need to re-word an explanation to avoid another accident. Like: Trope: Example is worded differently from TvT.

Ah, inventing a new trope name for a trope. Didn't know we can stretch our creative juices, like that.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

>  inventing a new trope name for a trope

Well, that's something a bit on the drastic side. Renaming a trope is always a community affair, where we discuss it in the forums and make sure we have a consensus before we do anything. It's not a casual solution to anything. Although there's nothing wrong with a redirect, or even just different pothole text more appropriate to the work in question. (An example of the latter can be found on the page for Desperately Seeking Ranma, where the context makes using the pothole "Magical Girl Fanfics Don't Use Codenames" more appropriate than the actual trope name, Comic Book Movies Don't Use Codenames.)

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

Sorry, I meant the tropes that don't have names, Looney Toons.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

If I understand you properly, I think what you're really discussing is creating a new trope from scratch. We do that over in the Trope Workshop. If that's the case, you may want to read the Trope Workshop Guidelines to get an idea what to do.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

I think the question, Geth, is simply about adding a trope entry to the work page. Jade, there's no copyright violation in just having a trope on the list that TVT also has -- it's only if you use the exact wording as TVT uses for the explanatory text in the entry that's the issue. For example, if a page on TVT had the entry:

 • Trope Name: Definitely in play in episode 299 when Alice thrashes Bob with a plush tyrannosaurus rex.

copying that word-for-word would not be permitted. But a simple rephrasing, such as

 • Trope Name: Seen in episode 299 when Bob is beaten about the head and shoulders with a plush dinosaur by Alice.

would be acceptable.

Now you may ask, "If I wrote the trope entry in question, can't I just copy it over, since it's under my copyright?" By the strict letter of the law and our policies, yes, I believe it would be okay. But I would still rephrase it, just to avoid any possible accusations.

Does that answer your question?

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

Oh, yes, that answers my questions.

Jade Shauni (talkcontribs)

I know it's a bit early to ask, but how do you put spoilers in the summary? Since I'm trying to re-word the examples. I wanna white out the spoilers, unless one highlights it with cursor.

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

Insert spoiler here

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Jade, if it helps, we have a kind of catch-all page called Administrivia which has links to a lot of useful pages. You might want to browse through it and the pages it connects to and take notes on anything that might come in handy. (Just as fair warning, though, this is kind of a "scratch" page which we intend on replacing some day, and isn't very pretty.)

You may also want to visit the Administrivia category and browse through its contents. It'll have a lot of overlap with the links from the Administrivia page, but I think there are things in the category which aren't on the page.
