I like the new user introduction!

Seriously, it's not bad. In fact, I like it so much, we should probably do what Wikipedia does and have new accounts redirect to that page as an "introduction" to troping. I forget exactly how they do that ATM, but it's a nice page, and I think it's a good idea. :) GethN7 (talk) 03:22, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Admin's Barnstar
For making sure our copyright and content policies are as clear and specific as need be and for doing (and continuing) the hard work of assuring our imported content is as human readable as possible. GethN7 (talk) 03:03, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

I need your help.

I have lots of questions and I'm receiving unclear information. GethN7 told me to consult with you. Can we speak on IRC? You're usually always there, but aren't right now. - Gilgamesh (talk) 03:42, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

Can I ask you for $1?

We're 9 days into our 30 day campaign, and we've raised $537. That's fantastic! The idea of Orain, our message, our purpose - it means something. The belief that there can be a community led, a community ran, and a community funded website that's not ad-driven or profit based works.

Our community has believed in us from the beginning, and I firmly believe that our community will stand by us and continue to support us. It's okay if we don't reach our $5,000 goal. $5,000 was a best case scenario. $1,000 enables us to stay online another year. It enables us to keep looking at alternatives and other ways to stay online and cut costs. $500 halves that time and shortens our research ability. 11% of our goal is better than 0% of our goal.

I've made a pledge from the beginning. I've vowed to never force ads on this community for the purpose of keeping Orain alive. Ads are what separate us from the other farms we compete with. I will give my personal funds before I enable ads by force. Ads are a nuisance that you should have a voice in. We've toyed with and are developing the idea of individual wikis who want ads within their community. Some people can't donate a dollar, and that's okay. That's their way of giving and I'm down for that.

To the backers who have helped so far, Thank you!

If you haven't had a chance to donate so far, please please do. Your $1 will help make a difference in the WikiFarm world. You can help us stay online, free, and ad free.

If you have a little more than a dollar and want an Orain t-shirt, we've got those. We've also got hoodies, coffee cups, and blankets. Most of these things will have to be purchased in bulk so there's likely going to be an online store for the leftover donation drive items once the campaign is over.

As always, I want to hear from you. If you have ideas to help our Indiegogo campaign please send them to me or email me.

I apologize for spamming you like this, but I love Orain, I believe in Orain, and I want to fight to keep it alive. If you no longer want to receive urgent messages like these, please send me an email and I'll ensure that you're not bothered further.

With love,
Dustin "Dusti" Muniz

D4rkB0t

I'm in the process of creating a bot for Miraheze users. d4rkst4r.miraheze.org/wiki/D4rkB0t You can read about it here. One feature that I'm going to add is MiraScript, a simple programming language to allow sysops to control D4rkB0t through a system message page.

I can setup whatever task you want so let me know if there's anything you want D4rkB0t to do here. D4rkst4r (talk) 02:35, 20 December 2015 (UTC)

Please disable Liquid Threads because it's awful and I refuse to use it. D4rkst4r (talk) 02:35, 20 December 2015 (UTC)

I'm the one who decided we'd use LiquidThreads, if only so we could mimic how forums and discussion threads are done on TV Tropes. If you wish to opt-out, that's fine by me. We planned to upgrade to Flow for most of the wiki and still leave the option to opt-out even then. As for disabling this globally, I'm afraid that's not practicable at this time even if we wanted to. As for the bot, thank you, your hard work is very appreciated. GethN7 (talk) 04:27, 20 December 2015 (UTC)
I don't expect you to discontinue Liquid Threads just because I said so, though I hope it would be a contributing factor if you decide to. It's really, really awful but I do respect Wikimedia's attempt to streamline talk pages. It's ugly too. Flow looks like a better discussion system and I'll give it a shot. Talk pages work fine but only for users who are already very familiar with wiki convention, and sticking with that is against the spirit of MediaWiki anyway. I've got better hopes for flow and I'll request it on my wikis if it's any good.
D4rkB0t's Miraheze module is hard coded to require miraheze.org subdomains and I decided to keep it that way for reasons I've listed at d4rkst4r.miraheze.org/wiki/Custom_domains. If the api will still work with the subdomain then it shouldn't be a problem. The only index.php access I'm working with is for crawling and importing other wikis that violate the wiki spirit and lock everything down. I'm going to test it by copying the Social Justice Wiki because they locked down everything and prevent account creation. D4rkst4r (talk) 20:36, 20 December 2015 (UTC)
@GethN7 I don't know if you saw this. D4rkst4r (talk) 17:38, 31 December 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the heads up. I look forward to the results of your hard work. As for the SJWiki, couldn't agree more, link me to the finished results plz. ^_^ GethN7 (talk) 20:20, 31 December 2015 (UTC)
@Vorticity @GethN7 Are there any tasks that you need help with automating on this wiki? I'm going to look into giving D4rkB0t support for custom domains on this wiki. D4rkst4r (talk) 01:30, 1 January 2016 (UTC)
We have some TV Trope artifacts lying around like messed up Unicode (since PmWiki uses a flawed interpretation of ti) and we could use a rump cleanup of any other parser artifacts left over from the initial conversion from PmWiki to MediaWiki. GethN7 (talk) 02:04, 1 January 2016 (UTC)
If you have a few examples I can get to work taking them out. D4rkst4r (talk)
Good place to start. TV Tropes has a customized PmWiki parser that left some bizarre artifiacts, and since they use CamelCase, some terms that were meaningless there and red links to nothing got transferred over here and need delinked. Also, trying to remove red links to the names of tropers that don't exist here, and those need delinked as well. Finally, some links are namespace/link items, which is specific to to TVT's parser and these need batch relinked to their appropriate page under MediaWiki parser guidelines. GethN7 (talk) 19:01, 1 January 2016 (UTC)
I'll make a bot that takes a list of all those wanted pages and then goes through all the pages of the wiki and removes the link syntax. D4rkst4r (talk) 04:22, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

Abuse Filter screwed over new users

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

I just checked the Abuse log, our spam filter hit a lot of legit users, so I promoted them to avoid that. I suggest checking the spam filter (I changed it to be less harsh) and promoting anyone to confirmed/auto-patrolled who made legit edits, possibly with a talk page message just to be sure they know.

Did you know...

Replace links to "Always Chaotic Evil" with links to "Exclusively Evil" (bot request)

3
QuestionableSanity (talkcontribs)

I would like a bot to replace all links to the Exclusively Evil article with links to Exclusively Evil, in order to encourage use of the new, less ambiguous terminology.

Also, do you have a page or mailing address specifically reserved for bot requests? If not, I think that would be a useful feature, especially if other bot-makers could pick up submitted requests while you were busy.

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

I've got a bot (Gethbot) I can run this request through.

QuestionableSanity (talkcontribs)

We should make a special page/forum for bot requests though. That way I won't have to keep bugging Vort.

Hi again. I need another bot please.

4
QuestionableSanity (talkcontribs)

This time I'd like a bot which scours through all the pages of All The Tropes. If it finds the string |wppage= , then add to the bottom of the article [[Category:Pages with working Wikipedia tabs]].

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

That could be more easily accomplished by adding the relevant line to the templates with those tabs.

QuestionableSanity (talkcontribs)

Sorry about the triple post. I got a gateway error about an hour ago, so I left it open in another tab, forgot about it, then tried resending the information... and, well, that happened.

Arcane (talkcontribs)

It's happens, you're fine.

BTW, should have fixed the issues by now, let me know if we still have problems.

Requesting a bot to add a template to a bunch of articles.

QuestionableSanity (talkcontribs)

If your offer to help me is still open, then I have a few tasks that need botting.

List of Tasks

If you can do all this, I will be very grateful.

Labster (talkcontribs)

Running the first task now (on category:useful notes). 820 members, gonna take a while. A slight difference here is that I needed to check for double-posts of {{Useful Notes}}, and subpages, so that was fun.

$page->{text} =~ s/\{\{Useful Notes(\|[^\{\}]+)?\}\}\n?(.*?)\{\{Useful Notes(\|[^\{\}]+)?\}\}\n?/
 			"{{Useful Notes" .($1 || $3 || '') ."}}\n$2"/seg;

I'm pretty sure I did that for Fanfic Authors really recently as part of tagging that category.

QuestionableSanity (talkcontribs)

I have no idea what that code even says. @_@

EDIT: Yikes, it untagged Category:Asia. I didn't want that to happen. Maybe I should check over all the changes the bot made afterward. What's its "account name"?

EDIT 2: Almost forgot to say "Thank you!"

Labster (talkcontribs)

User:Dai-Guard. Also good luck with looking at the changes, I've run a lot of jobs tonight. But probably what happened is it just detagged categories.

QuestionableSanity (talkcontribs)

I protected the other sub-categories from getting removed, by re-inserting {{Useful Notes}} at the top of each one. I just have to find the one other that got removed, which should be at the beginning. So it shouldn't be too bad.

EDIT: Oh, it was already finished two hours ago. And it seems to have left all the sub-categories, except for Asia, untouched. But I could have sworn it was 17 before...

Fate/Stay Night, Fate/Hollow Ataraxia, etc.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Just noticed that you moved "Fate Hollow Ataraxia (Visual Novel)" to "Fate/hollow ataraxia", Brent. Did you intend for that to be a subpage under the video game Fate?

I ran into the same problem with one of the other Fate* series, I think it was Fate/Stay Night and ended up giving up on using the slash. I forget if I used a dash or just a space, but I didn't like the namespacing that resulted if I did the name completely literally. Lookingat Wikipedia, I see they don't care -- they let the namespacing fall as it may for these titles. But having a completely unrelated work be the root for these pages bugs the hell out of me.

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

I fixed it by moving it back to Fate/hollow ataraxia while leaving {{DISPLAYTITLE:Fate/hollow ataraxia}} on the page. A similar fix was done to the Fate/stay night page, though the proper title redirects appropriately to the page with the (Visual Novel) ending in both cases.

Wikipedia solved the problem by doing this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fate_%28video_game%29

This sidesteps the issue with the Fate/stay night and Fate/hollow ataraxia pages backlinking to the Fate (video game) page.

Labster (talkcontribs)

Oh, that was a custom title, I totally missed that.

Maybe we could name it Fate⁄stay night? I'm always a fan of unicode abuse.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Works for me. And cool, I learned a new MediaWiki thingie with Displaytitle.

Damian Yerrick (talkcontribs)

I guess that depends on whether we want a Nic Cage/John Travolta movie (Face/Off) to be a subpage of the opposite of a "heel".

QuestionableSanity (talkcontribs)

I'm thinking about implementing a Related Tropes subpage, listing each trope's subtropes and supertropes in one easy-to-read chart. You may recall that TV Tropes tried to do something similar, but it never panned out. I want to try to make it happen, as a way to give us something that we do better than TV Tropes.

If this sounds interesting to you, hit up this thread to see what I'm looking for specifically.

Topazan (talkcontribs)

Since you were the one who suggested I should sandbox my wiki suggestion, I would like to request you look at the forum thread in wiki talk where I link to my attempt.

The more I think about it, the more I think that format has some potential to lead to some interesting analysis. Just thinking about the work I used as an example, there's a lot that can be said about the narrative role served by different factions within the comic. I would like to continue to expand it as soon I get the go-ahead from you mods.
