Abuse Filter screwed over new users

2
GethN7 (talkcontribs)

I just checked the Abuse log, our spam filter hit a lot of legit users, so I promoted them to avoid that. I suggest checking the spam filter (I changed it to be less harsh) and promoting anyone to confirmed/auto-patrolled who made legit edits, possibly with a talk page message just to be sure they know.

Afraid I've going have to countermand that Tabber page merging

3
GethN7 (talkcontribs)

Sorry, but please, put the seperate examples on the appropriate subpages.

Tabber needs to be use on Index pages for sorting things that would be disgusting long lists that don't fit into the category list generated below, the main page, and for making lists in general less disgustingly long.

Another reason for this to prevent a ton of unstyled content flashing (and prevent too much page weirdness if the extension craps out one day).

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

I've taken care of restoring/reverting the pages.

If you want to have a bot for batch editing, here's a good one

6
GethN7 (talkcontribs)

Get AutoWikiBrowser. Tailored specifically for MW, and you can have it batch edit a lot of things you'd have to ask someone else to do a bot job with.

Also, as an admin, you can ignore the api limits and bot a ton of pages.

You can either set up a bot account (create an account, give it the bot flag), or you can use AWB through your current account.

QuestionableSanity (talkcontribs)

When editing account rights for QuestionBot, I can't select the "bot" checkbox.

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

You needed bureaucrat rights (I and Vorticity have those). I added the bot flag for you.

QuestionableSanity (talkcontribs)

Thanks!

QuestionableSanity (talkcontribs)

I'm trying to set the correct website in AWB, but when I try to enter allthetropes.orain.org/wiki/Main_Page, I get an error.

Enter the URL in the format "en.wikipedia.org/w/" (including path where index.php and api.php reside).
Error description: Root element is missing.

I also tried allthetropes.orain.org/wiki/, meta.orain.org/wiki/, and other variations.

Hierarchical reorganization of media types on Tropes template

3
Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

While I like the idea behind this, I have some problems with it in actual practice.

It adds a level of complexity to the trope list that I think will be counterintuitive, and it breaks the simple alphabetization of media types that helps our readers quickly find what they're interested in. For example, with pages organized as they are now, if I want to see Comic Book examples, I can find the link immediately. With this new scheme, I have to go searching for it -- and if I'm not sure what category it should be in, I can't even be sure we have that section without scrolling through the entire page.

I think this will cause more trouble than it's worth.

I'm also not sure I want to see the inconsistency between "old" pages and "new" ones, nor do I want to (by implication) impose the task of converting one to the other on the wiki with so much cleanup from the initial conversion still needed.

That said, the new media types themselves are worth keeping. I just don't think we should add that extra level of categorization to them.

QuestionableSanity (talkcontribs)

Alright, I hear you. I just added a couple of media types you missed.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Cool. Sorry to have acted unilaterally, but I waited 24 hours to see if you had a response first; I should have waited longer.

MediaWiki messages pages answers

3
GethN7 (talkcontribs)

Still feeling like crap thanks to a stomach bug, won't be around much for the next few days, but I'll answers your question while I'm feeling halfway decent.

Most of the MW message pages you weren't sure if we should delete, leave them be. They are either stock text left by the initial install (deleting them would either break something or be pointless, given those pages are placeholders), or serve a role as parts of templates or other site code.

I heartily approve of ther changes you made to the boilerplate, also keeping that delete reason you added, nice work. ^_^

Until I feel better, you and Bob (LT) are holding down the fort for the next few days, but don't be shy to leave me a message if you need to in the meantime.

QuestionableSanity (talkcontribs)

Thank you. But the reason I reverted my edit on the delete reasons page is because, when I tested out the delete page, the "Other" reason was cut off in the drop-down list.

Stomach bugs are the worst. Get well soon.

You've done exemplary work, I would like to ask if you'd like to be an administrator.

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

You've done a fine job on ATT, cleaning up and creating templates, making good edits, and doing your best to help us make a better troping website, so I was considering nominating you for admin.

I'll have to obviously discuss the matter with my fellow staff and the ATT community, but I think you would be well suited for those duties, should you be willing.

QuestionableSanity (talkcontribs)

Thank you for the offer.

I have some concerns that need to be addressed before I can accept. Chief among them is the recent change in ownership at TV Tropes, and how embroiled I would be in future dealings between the wikis.

If the new head honcho rejects the terms that you've outlined for him (as in your blog post), I suspect that the cold war between the wikis will turn very hot. Whether you or TV Tropes decides to file legal action against the other, I don't want to be viewed as an accountable party. I'm not at all confident in my financial stability right now.

So for the time being, I'm going to decline. I want to wait and see how things turn out between us and TV Tropes before I throw my hat into the ring. And if diplomatic relations turn out to be peaceful, or you can convince me beyond all doubt that we'll win any lawsuit, then I'll address the other major concern I have, which is a relatively more personal one.

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

Well, the good news is that initial signs are promising that the new owner wants to work with us, as I got back a response that they want to extend us an olive branch and are willing to work with us on this copyright issue, and are aware of our site and our purpose and would like to improve relations, not to mention are no longer beholden to any Fast Eddie's old policies anymore (basically, he no longer dictates the rules).

Regardless, your concerns are understandable and I don't blame you for waiting, so we'll keep you apprised of how matters progress, then we can address this topic at another time.

QuestionableSanity (talkcontribs)

Alright, cool. Thanks for understanding. ^_^

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

It's been awhile since we last asked, so I was wondering if you are still interested.

If not or you wish to decline, I understand.

QuestionableSanity (talkcontribs)

Alright, let's try it for a week and see how it goes.

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

You are now a sysop.

QuestionableSanity (talkcontribs)

Thank you. Let me know what you specifically need done, and I'll do it.

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

Well, three things.

  • Janitor work. Delete pages needing deleted, handling spammers, etc.
  • Editing system messages/gadgets, anything that requires sysop access that is screwed up and needs improvement, if need be.
  • Anything else you can think of that would benefit ATT in some way.

why you are randomly removing illustrations?

8
TBeholder (talkcontribs)

For example, what was wrong with this one?

QuestionableSanity (talkcontribs)

I'm not randomly removing them. I'm replacing them with video.

Is your browser failing to load video? What's your setup?

TBeholder (talkcontribs)

My setup is "YouTube links on 3rd party sites are suppressed by default because I don't care for sudden massive slowdowns from multiple stupid autostarting embeds on forums, nor for Google tracking".

You for some reason seem to assume embedding is automatically the greatest idea since baking cakes. It so much not so that it's hard to guess where such a notion comes from.

Non-autostarting embedded player shows a preview frame, usually very non-indicative. Like in this case. Even if this was the same frame, an embedded player that needs to be clicked adds nothing an image that needs to be clicked doesn't have, but it has overlay controls and border, while a static picture is clean. While autostarting embeds must die because they run away on their own, unless one clicks on the page just to see its embedded video, so they agressively consume resources while adding mostly annoyance.

That's before problems specifically with youtube, which are many, but mostly boil down to "it's google in sheep's skin" and "ludicrous content removal policies".

QuestionableSanity (talkcontribs)

To solve your immediate problem: I use AdBlock Plus for Firefox, and I don't get those video ads that you do. I also disable it on AllTheTropes. Try that setup, it'll fix your problems.

As to everything else, sometimes a simple image ISN'T useful. The old image for Jedi Mind Trick just shows one of the hand positions used to do the trick, and doesn't actually illustrate its effects. You NEED to see it in action for it to be illustrative. Same for Mugging the Monster; all it shows is one guy's knife being bigger than the other. It doesn't show the setup and payoff that's essential to the trope.

YouTube is shit, I won't deny that. If it helps, I can always upload them to my personal account on DailyMotion.

TBeholder (talkcontribs)

> To solve your immediate problem: I use AdBlock Plus for Firefox, and I don't get those video ads that you do.

Er, what? Speaking of AdBlock, isn't it the most obvious way to block embeds at third-party pages only?

> As to everything else, sometimes a simple image ISN'T useful.

Well, yes. Usually it's better than video, however.

> Same for Mugging the Monster; all it shows is one guy's knife being bigger than the other. It doesn't show the setup and payoff that's essential to the trope.

Not really. It shows at least the look of surprise. Besides, the scene is so classic, it's mostly a reference anyway. Though if it was, it would be just a badly picked illustration. And this doesn't address the simple issues invalidating the whole jig: video doesn't really show the sequence properly if autostarted, because the reader does not really see it from 0:00, and works better with custom preview than with automated if it's click-to-play. Also, images are cached and don't consume resources on second view, while streams generally aren't. The result is moving a navigable site one step closer to a flashy unusable powerpoint presentation no one tries to watch twice.

> I can always upload them to my personal account on DailyMotion.

Congratulations - now ATT is covered in black rectangles with

Sorry, something went wrong...
Please refresh this page or come back later.

QuestionableSanity (talkcontribs)

The videos work. In fact, I never saw them go down at all. So it was obviously just a temporary hiccup, something this very wiki suffers from time to time, and yet we tolerate.

I suspect that reconciliation on this matter will be impossible.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

I feel the need to chime in here -- I have yet to see the "black rectangles" TBeholder sees. Even Adblock set to at its most paranoid on my home system, I have no problems viewing any of QS's DailyMotion videos.

TBeholder (talkcontribs)

I see that message right now, even though scripts from daylymotion and dmcdn.net are allowed. Refreshing brings up "unable to connect" message in the frame. Maybe the problem is an on-off thing, or with one of the many caches between client and two sets of servers, or with geoip-mirrors... either way it's at least unreliable.

Anyway, kind of illustrates my point - embeds "as is" tend to more impair functionality than improve it when they work well... and when not, with external embeds pinpointing the problem is not easy, and if we'll do that, it may turn out to be beyond our reach. The usual consequences of pointless overcomplication of trivial things.

We have Dailymotion video permissions enabled, and a request

2
GethN7 (talkcontribs)

QS, we have the ability to post these instead of Youtube videos now.

Also, request: Please discuss video replacements for images on the talk pages before doing them. While I appreciate you're giddy with the ability to provide animated illustrations, this is causing friction with other users, so please discuss your proposed changes in this regard from now on.

Got it.

QuestionableSanity (talkcontribs)

I think it would be more sensible to not use this header template at all, since it's clearly not optimized for this wiki.

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

Eh, your call. Me, I just strip out the Wikibooks specific parts and find it works just fine.
