Rinkan Club (visual novel)

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.
The city of Rinin.

A 2008 H-game developed and published by Anime Lilith.

Rinin is a city on a remote place of Japan. The city looks friendly and calm from far away, and most citizens seem to live in ignorance of its darker aspects, but nonetheless Rinin has a dark tradition: to appease the wrath of the goddess Iwanaga-Hime, a sacrifice must be made to him ever full moon, the sacrifice of a woman. But instead of her life itself, the woman must be impregnated to ensure fertility to the earth, appeasing the wrath of the god by posing as his sister Konohanasakuya-hime. And if she is not, she must be really sacrificed, her body thrown down the river.

Though the second part is no longer practiced with real people, using a paper doll instead, the impregnation part is. Such ritual is executed by the titular Rinkan Club, whose very leader is the protagonist. But the protagonist can't choose the sacrifice by themselves: a relative, even a lover, must nominate the sacrifice, called a "shrine maiden". The protagonist then selects the next victim of the available candidates. Willingness of the victims themselves is optional.

The series was adapted into a four-part anime OVA and a two-part live action pornographic movie by ZIZ.

Directed by Sasayama Ittousai, who also directed Kangoku Senkan.

Tropes used in Rinkan Club (visual novel) include:
  • Ambiguous Gender: The protagonist is not referred by name and every scene up until the reveal of who they are nobody talking to him uses any terms who may describe his gender. Even the way they describe being aroused, by saying their body feels hot, makes it impossible to guess if they are man or woman.
  • Animal Motifs: For Kajimura is the snake. Not only is described to be seen like a snake by female schoolgirls, is treacherous and announces out loud his intentions to betray the group and help Suzuko dissolve the club if his desires aren't satisfied, embodying the treachery aspects associated with the animal.
  • Anti-Villain: Untimely the Rape Club is really protecting the village of an angry deity. In fact, the only thing makes them villains is how they clearly enjoy too much doing their job.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: In all "good" endings, the ritual continues as usual, with the news crew Suzuko tries to bring to make the ritual public being dismissed by the club president.
  • Bolivian Army Ending: The good Motoko ending involves she being handed to the Rinkan Club. No sex is shown but she has become completely submissive after drinking semen, so she probably was gang-raped.
  • Brother-Sister Incest:
    • Tomomi is lusted by her brother Satoru and that is one of the reasons she nominates her to be shrine maiden.
    • The male protagonist is all too eager to commit sexual acts with Suzuko, though he was like that even before knowing she is his sister.
  • Cain and Abel: The protagonist and Suzuko are siblings, with the protagonist clearly falling more on the Caim line.
  • Depraved Bisexual: Motoko is the leader of the Rape Club, lusts over women and rapes a male.
  • Downer Ending: In all "good" endings, the Rinkan Club keeps operating. Even when Suzuko makes Motoko the maiden on the female protagonist's path, she shows no intention of dissolving the club, having become corrupted by their rituals.
  • Even Evil Has Standards:
    • The protagonist is utterly disgusted by Kajimura's attempts at making Shiori shrine maiden by coercing her young brother just so he can hurt a fellow teacher, club member and Shiori's husband, Toshinobu, which is more popular with the female students, and literally prays for a god for him to die.
    • Toshinobu is disliked by both the protagonist and Kajimura for perceived self-centeredness. The club members do have pleasure doing their jobs but satisfying their own personal desires goes against an internal principle of everyone being on equal status.
  • Hate Sink: Kajimura, which clearly sees the club as outlet for his own jealously and lust. The protagonist feels arousal at the rapes and allows the members to have fun as they please, but they would never try to force someone to nominate someone to be a maiden.
  • Hospital Hottie: Both Aiko and Natsuko are curvy, busty and pretty and work in the local hospital as doctor and nurse respectively.
  • Hot Teacher:
    • Shiori and Suzuko are high school teachers who are both curvaceous, busty and pretty.
    • Toshinobu is said to be one, but the audience never gets a look at his face.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Most part of the city seems unaware of the ritual. Seems, however. A lot of them simply demonstrates ignorance to hide the club's existence. Part of that can be explained the victims being unwilling to tell their children about the truth.
  • Making Love in All the Wrong Places: The Club is not afraid of engaging on activities on public places, but they do seem to try to hide in plain sight.
  • Necessarily Evil: How the Club model themselves. Considering the supernatural elements are shown to be all too real, the trope is actually played straight. The only evil aspect is that they do take pleasure on doing their job.
  • Oedipus Complex: Mizuki is not only incestuous but extremely possessive of his mother Natsuko, going on a tantrum at the idea of her becoming married again. It is heavily implied his father's premature death led to this.
  • Parental Incest: Mizuki uses his mom's breasts for his own pleasure and makes her the next shrine maiden under the condition he can rape her first.
  • Pet the Dog: The protagonist's treatment of Mamoru is pretty sweet for someone which goes around ordering people to be raped. They don't accept him being coerced into nominating his older sister after being caught peeping on schoolgirls and suggests for him to nominate his oldest female relative, lessening the damage the rapes will cause.
  • Rape by Proxy: The protagonist assigns the next shrine maidens but is never shown engaging on the rape.
  • Scare'Em Straight: How the protagonist convinces Mamoru to nominate a shrine maiden? By taking him to Tanamura's place of death, making the boy truly convinced that the gods are real after the protagonist prayed for his death and it became true, and the sacrifices are necessary.
  • Sexy Discretion Shot: Used several times. Tomomi's first rape, as Aiko's, are not shown. In her "good" ending, Motoko being gang-raped is not shown, with the final erotic scene being her drinking semen.
  • Shotacon: Aiko manifests half-jokingly sexual desires towards Mizuki, which is implied to be only on the verge of adolescence.
  • Stripperiffic: Aiko's swimsuit is one breath away of showing something naughty. Her husband barely can contain himself at the sight and leaves to not look too much excited.
  • Villainous Incest:
    • Male relatives who nominate their female ones to be maidens have a high probability of treating them abusively and using her shrine maiden status to rape them. Mamoru is an exception to the rule.
    • The protagonist engaging on incest with Suzuko shows how even further from the edge of morality he is falling.
  • Unspoken Plan Guarantee: Kajimura tells of his plan to the protagonist of how making Suzuko a shrine maiden offscreen; it works perfectly once it's revealed to be obtaining DNA samples.
  • Your Cheating Heart:
    • Aiko is clearly hanging on the edge of cheating on her husband at the beginning of the game, though most of the drama being of Natsuko being repulsed by it, especially Aiko's implication she is somehow gifted for being a widower and that if she was living her life, she would be changing partners constantly.
    • Even after she ceases to be a maiden entirely, she keeps cheating on her husband for money at an extremely low price for 2008 standards. Toshio and Maki discover that and are horrified.
