Talk:Hollywood Japan

Since it seems to be the game everyone is playing the last few weeks, this is my turn at proposing a rename. Using the same name as a famous film about WWII makes this page sound like a military trope, which it very much isn't. It also sounds like a trope about being in the air above Tokyo, which it isn't, either.

As written, the trope seems to be mostly "western media views of Tokyo". Can we perhaps find a name that works for Tokyo the same way that Big Applesauce works for New York City? If I had a good suggestion I'd offer it, but I don't, so I'm soliciting other folks.

I propose this name because Edo is the more archaic name for Tokyo and unlikely to be confused for much else to my knowledge.

Isn't this supposed to be stereotypical depictions of Japan in general, though? As the page currently is, the first two examples are about places in west Japan.

If there's still going to be a rename, though, I suggest "Generippon" as a portmanteau of "generic" and "Nippon".

A little opaque to someone coming on it cold, though, wouldn't you say? At the very least it would qualify for the esoteric trope names category.

Well, I'd be perfectly fine with an alternative coming up.

I don't like any of those renaming proposals.

Though, in a way of trying to prevent even further damage, I would suggest "thirty milimeters of Tokyo, I mean, Japan", because he view of Japan as presented by the trope is one ridiculously narrow.

I know some people will say it's pretty long, bu it's o make the point of how american/european media tries to portray Tokyo as the only japanese city to exist, and only making the wackiest references so they can prove their own supposed cultural superiority.

...There's no "damage" resulting from this discussion, at least none that's occurred so far.

I sense plenty of nitpicking and obsession over details and celebrities users do not like in those changes. It's like this site is trying to being re-written by the writers of the A.V. Club, which is sinister considering how pro-censorship and pro media control that site is. I hope none of you guys have a hidden hand ready to suggest we get rid of certain pages next.

Umbire has the right of it, this is a harmless discussion, and if a majority rules, we go with consensus, and the trope in question is not being censored, it's a potential rename to make it's subject matter more clear.

That said, please avoid getting personal with people.

I think you're just projecting your personal hangups onto people, and that's as far as I'm entertaining this.

Why not use the first line of the page quote, "Moon Over Japan"?

I'm not sure "Moon Over Japan" is any more indicative of what the trope is, though.

EDIT: Perhaps "Generica Japonica" for something Boring but Practical that also plays on the scientific name for wasabi?

Good compromise choice IMO.

I think that this may be the be the best option for a trope rename (although I like Generippon a bit more because IO like portmanteaus). It may be a bit esoteric, but it's clearer than the alternatives and goes to the point.

Circling back to this - wondering if anyone's taken the time to consider this or has anything to add.

Sadly it dropped off my radar with other things demanding my attention. I'll try to think on it some more.

Hmmmmm... We have over five dozen tropes named with the pattern "Hollywood FOO" (Category:Hollywood Style has the list).

Why not call this "Hollywood Japan"?

Yeah, that could work - I was hoping to avoid reliance on any particular naming scheme, but if it ain't broke then hey.

I have no problems with "Hollywood Japan" if the rest of you want it.
