Terminator: Dark Fate

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Dani Ramos: How do we win?
Sarah Connor: By keeping you alive.

Terminator: Dark Fate is the sixth film in the Terminator franchise, released in Europe on October 23, 2019 and in North America a week later. It marks James Cameron's return to the franchise as the producer; his last time working on a Terminator movie was 1996 (Terminator 2 3-D: Battle Across Time). It's directed by Tim Miller and written by Billy Ray, David S. Goyer, Justin Rhodes and Josh Friedman with the plot based on a story by James Cameron, Tim Miller and David Ellison.

The film takes place 27 years after Terminator 2: Judgment Day with a new, modified liquid metal Terminator (Gabriel Luna) sent from the future in order to terminate Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes), a cyborg named Grace (Mackenzie Davis), and her friends. Sarah Connor comes to their aid, and the original Terminator (disguised as an older person and played once again by Arnold Schwarzenegger) come to their aid in this new fight for the future. It is a direct sequel to Terminator 2: Judgment Day, ignoring the previous sequels to the film. Newcomers to the franchise include Mackenzie Davis, Diego Boneta, Natalia Reyes, and Gabriel Luna.

Tropes used in Terminator: Dark Fate include:
  • Action Girl: Sarah Connor and Grace. Dani becomes one over the course of the film.
  • Canon Discontinuity: Rise of the Machines, Salvation, Genisys and The Sarah Connor Chronicles are all implicitly dismissed as alternate timelines.
  • Dark Is Evil: The antagonist Terminator REV-9's endoskeleton and liquid metal skin are colored black.
  • Drop the Hammer: Grace fights the REV-9 with a sledgehammer at one point in the factory scene.
  • Kill and Replace: The REV-9 does this with Dani's father when it fails to locate Dani at her place before following her to the factory.
  • Heel Face Turn: The T-800 now known as Carl decided to peacefully integrate into human society after his mission was complete. When he met Sarah, Grace and Dani he offered to help train Dani in combat.
  • Light Is Good: In contrast to the REV-9, Grace has a gold-colored exoskeleton.
  • Me's a Crowd: The REV-9 can split its liquid metal skin can split from its endoskeleton and function independently in a manner similar to the T-1000.
  • Old Master: Carl gives this vibe, being a T-800 who looks like an old man and helping train Dani in combat, complete with training grounds.
  • Not So Stoic: Despite seeming apathetic to its surroundings and others, when disguised as a border patrol officer and going through a checkpoint, the REV-9 says "My whole body is a weapon" with a note of irony in its voice.
  • Squick: Grace has a wound on her torso, first seen on a gurney in hospital revealing her be a human modified into a Terminator.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute:
    • Dani Ramos serves as one for John Connor, being the target for the REV-9, the new hero of humanity and the character everyone is trying to save.
    • Grace serves as one for Marcus Wright, being a human made into a Terminator.
    • The AI. Legion serves as this for Skynet in the film's timeline.
  • Terminator Twosome: A variant with three of them, or four if you count the REV-9's ability. The main antagonist terminator is the REV-9 - that can split its liquid metal form from its endoskeleton - whose default human disguise is portrayed by Gabriel Luna, the second is a heroic cyborg called Grace played by Mackenzie Davis and the third is Carl, a T-800 played by Arnold Schwarzenegger.
