Theodore Sturgeon (February 26, 1918 -- May 8, 1985) was an influential writer, working in the science fiction, fantasy, horror, and other genres.
He never gained the popular fame that his contemporaries Asimov, Bradbury, and Heinlein had. Within fan circles, though, he was as well-regarded as any of those men.
Star Trek fans remember him as the scriptwriter of the original series episode "Amok Time", which established the Vulcans as their own species instead of just "emotionless people with pointy ears". In another, unproduced, script, he introduced the Prime Directive to the setting.
Kurt Vonnegut's fans know Theodore Sturgeon as the inspiration for the character Kilgore Trout.
Everybody else remembers him for Sturgeon's Law.
