Tropes used in Watching Yute include:
- Awesome but Impractical: The Yute spears that the temple guards use, but this is averted because of the mysterious force that prevents firearms from being used inside the temple.
- Booby Trap: Horad has a spring loaded one in his hideout, but it rarely sees action, as people know how to disable it and pass.
- Break the Cutie
- The Chains of Commanding: Cipriana goes through this shortly after she takes command at the Yute temple base after Marcus died.
- Cloning Gambit: Used by Kirison, Doesn't necessarily clone himself, but instead makes multiple copies of his brain to use.
- Cool Old Guy: Major Marcus Douglas.
- Drama Bomb: Pretty much the entire second half of the novel. Gets pretty hilarious, actually.Detonates just when you were about to drop the book and go read something else,so it's not all bad.
- Karmic Death: Averted with and played straight.
- Manipulative Bastard: Kirison, who made Horad believe that everything he did in the story was for the glory of the Aguei.
- Memento MacGuffin
- Well-Intentioned Extremist: Horad believes that the Aguei have forgotten their true roots and disgraced the Yute temple, which leads him to work with and believe everything Kirison said about restoring the Aguei to their former glory.
- What the Hell, Hero?: Cipriana almost says this word by word (with a few swears mixed in) after she interrupted Cassidy, who was just about to kill herself.
