Artificial Academy

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

The Artificial Academy series, as of 2019, is a pair of H-games produced by the Japanese game developer Illusion. Originally just a spin off of Artificial Girl, Artificial Academy differentiates itself by basically being a Create-Your-Own-Visual Novel of sorts. After Illusion switched from using their in-house engine to Unity, it got a spiritual successor in the form of Koikatu.

Supported by a sizable modding community, the pair of games let you create a broad spectrum of characters, mostly stemming from High School Slice of Life and Harem Genre tropes with distinct personalities for either gender based on said tropes. Artificial Academy 2 differentiates itself by offering increased customization compared to the original, as well as more options for uniforms, interactions, and the ability to choose a teacher for your class of 24 students, all of whom can technically be the Player Character.

Because of this, it encompasses an immense array of anime tropes and likely combinations thereof, played more or less according to however the player sees fit.

Tropes used in Artificial Academy include:
  • A-Cup Angst: Demonstrated by some character types.
  • Anime Hair: Entirely possible, though more eccentric hair color combinations might require mods.
  • Bastard Boyfriend: Both this and its Bespectacled counterpart are possible with the Schemer (and to some extent Evil) trait. It's also possible to make a female version.
  • Beady-Eyed Loser: Entirely possible to make.
  • Class Representative: Anyone with the Class President trait can naturally be assumed to be this.
  • Depraved Homosexual / Depraved Bisexual: A natural result of making a Homosexual or Bisexual character with the "evil" trait. Though it's also possible for them to be (arguably) depraved without being evil, and for the straights to be just as bad/good.
  • Everyone Is Bi: It's entirely possible to make a class of bisexuals or homosexuals without too much complication.
  • Foreign Fanservice: The Playful personality in 2 sometimes makes Gratuitous English with a mild accent, so it's easy to make foreigners with this personality.
  • Hot For Teacher: Very likely in 2, which might eventually lead to a Teacher-Student Romance.
  • Hot Teacher: Entirely possible to have this trope in play in 2, easily available in male and female variants.
  • Psycho Lesbian: The result of making a lesbian character with the "Evil" trait. Some other applications
  • Refuge in Audacity: The Otaku personality for male characters. Despite otaku being the very people the game is marketed to, this personality is every stereotypical depiction of an otaku rolled into one. However, since it's so over the top, it's hard to be angry about it.
  • Spiritual Successor: Koikatu combines a lot of Artificial Academy's nature (school setting and highly slice of life harem anime trappings) and the technical power of the Unity engine that Illusion has made use of since Play Club.
  • Tall, Dark and Bishoujo: A common character archetype to make. Or subvert.
  • Tall, Dark and Snarky: Likewise.
  • Teacher-Student Romance: Entirely possible in the sequel, and given the limit of only one class per "world" and only one teacher per class, it's the only option for teachers to get loving. Though either side being the 'prominent' one. Note that getting caught by the Class President will result in the teacher being fired - and a Game Over if you're playing as said teacher - unless the Class President is the one you're in the relationship with.
  • Tsundere: A specific trait applicable to anyone of either gender, and to some extent the "Irritated" personality tends to act like your stereotypical sort
  • Straw Loser: The Creepy personality for girls and the Otaku personality for boys.
  • Yandere: Don't try to break up with someone with the Evil trait, and in 2, don't ignore them, and don't give them the impression that you're unfaithful. One of the darker ways to get a game over.
